The PDA based phones are large devices, go to a local phone store and check the range out, O2 do the XDA Mini-S and XDA-Exec (the later being a very large device) both of which are quite capable of running a navigation application, but they would both require an external GPS reciever. The size of these type of device might put you off, so check them out before you order/ purchase - I have used PDA phones for quite some time and find the devices a great addition to the pocket (it saves carrying a PDA and a phone).
There are very few PDA based phones that have integral GPS units, when they do it is normaly at the expense of WiFi (this is what lets down the A701 in my opinion, OK you can put a WiFi card in it but then you loose the memory card), this has recently changed with the introduction of the HTC P3300 (press release can be found HERE There are retailers starting to stock this device as of today in the UK, but it is a new device with little known about it at the moment - it looks promising, but the processor is questionable in terms of horsepower.
The other option is the SmartPhone devices, these don't offer a touch screen (unlike the PDA based devices) but can be used for certain navigation applications - again you will be hard pushed to find one with inbuilt GPS, the plus side to these units is there size and weight, they look and feel like a normal phone, the downside is display size and ease of use when compared to a PDA based device - Mike
