Is this Google map working correctly?
On entering the location in fails to provide a 'cross hair' and the message 'searching' appears!
The general location appears but not the excact location.
This problem appeared some months ago. |

your way of entering coordinates looks a bit, uhm, unique. How about trying a standard format? _________________ Lutz

On the Google map on the database website you have as an example:-
51.523 N, 0.8123 W
That is what I'm trying, but no crosshairs!
How can I input a camera location without seeing the exact location!
There has been a problem with this before! |

When I search for a location, say "Oxford" and zoom in a little and move the map around a bit (technical stuff I know) - the cross hairs do appear albeit rather small.
When I type in a location, say "51.76299, -1.19661" (centre of the Green Road Roundabout in Headington, Oxford), I don't get the crosshairs until I move the map.
Thus I’m not getting the cross hairs to appear until the map is moved.

Therefore the cross hairs are not at the input location, but at the centre of where you have moved to!
I use garmin to record, and then enter the details into Google but I cannot see the location cross hairs!!
No wonder the cameras end up 90feet from a Google road! |

Hi strumble,
I must admit to a bit of quick learning here as I always submit updates from the files created by POI Capture.
Here’s how I think the Google map should be used:
1. Type in your location or coordinates in the "Find a location" field.
2. Hit the "find" button
3. If necessary adjust the level of zoom.
4. Move the map until the cross hairs are on the target location.
5. Repeat step 4 until you're happy with the location of the cross hairs
6. Hit the "Update Co-ordinates" button, this fills in the Latitude and Longitude fields of the "Single Camera Input" area.
7. If You're unhappy with the location of the crosshairs redo from step 3
8. If you're happy with the location of the cross hairs then fill in the rest of the fields in the "Single Camera Input" area.
9. Hit the "Send Entry" button to send the details to the database administrator.

I have been doing that but
When I input the exact location of a camera from my Garmin unit, as 51.523, -0.8123 [this is an example from the submission Google map] I should see the exact location marked by the cross hairs!! But the cross hairs do not appear [until you move the map]
I cannot use your point 4 Quote: | Move the map until the cross hairs are on the target location | without losing the original 51.523, -0.8123.
Once you move the map the appearing cross hairs become the centre of a 'new map' view, and not the input location!
This is where the inaccuracy lies!
This fault existed before and was corrected. |

If you type 51.523, -0.8123 into http://local.google.com/ you get an exact location mark which remains constant on all zoom levels and if you move the map sideways!!!
This is what should be happening on the submission page.
You can see that the example location is clearly off the road! |

Perhaps we need a "Refresh Map" button that forces the cross hairs to appear on the map at the correct coordinates.
Lutz, would this be possible?

This morning, 10amGMT, the Google map operation is not working!
The 'FIND' facility is not working at all.
All the other Google maps are working [Google Earth etc] it is just the map on the submission page that is a problem!
Has the layout of this website been changed/modernized? |

I cannot understand your comment.
I use Garmin units, are you saying that the readings are not standard from them??
I also use the supplied example formats from the submission page
Quote: | You can search using co-ordinates like "51.523, -0.8123" or "51.523 N, 0.8123 W" or places like "weybourne road, farnham". |

N52 01.756 W5 04.333 is not standard. that's what I was referring too.
Should be N52° 01.756' W5° 04.333'
Anyhow, the raison d'čtre for the crosshair is - a privateer describes - to help you adjust the position if you see that it is not in sync with the map. If you are dead certain that your Garmin is right then you can simply enter the coordinates into the submission form, and don't need the map at all.
The way we are doing geodecoding (getting a place name out of a coordinate) is, uhm, not exactly how Google envisioned it. We are not using the Google Maps API for that (because it sucks) - we use Google Local UK. But we're doing that in a pretty twisted way which can break as soon as Google Local changes their output format. Which they do frequently... _________________ Lutz

Quote: | N52 01.756 W5 04.333 is not standard. |
But it is acceptable to Garmin, Google local, Google earth and on a 'good day' to the Google map on the camera submission page!
Quote: | Should be N52° 01.756' W5° 04.333' |
This is not acceptable to Garmin and MapSource!
Quote: | Should be N52° 01.756' W5° 04.333' |
Anyway this does not work on the Google map on the camera submission page! The whole FIND procedure is not working

Are you saying that the problem exists and this is the cause?
All I want to know is there a known problem [besides me!!]
Can anyone else in the UK confirm that the Google map on the camera submission page is working or not, please? |
