Excuse my rant but...

I've been on this site for an hour now attempting to simply update my TomTom camera database, I've paid my two quid and I just want to drop the right files for my TomTom 700 onto my PC so I can drag 'em onto the TomTom (plugged into the USB port). So WHY is there no simple explanation anywhere of how to actually do it???

I've read the users guide but it simply says "download the database, save to PC " and then goes on to describe what to do with it from there on in.

Now when I click to download it gives me options that are not mentioned in the instructions.

For example, do I want "TomTom Home" or TomTom Ov2? Well I've got a TomTom 700 so short answer is, haven't got a clue!!

So I stab a guess at TomTom Home. (who knows? 50/50 chance of getting it right I guess).

Oh, and it also says something about backing up the files or something before you begin, but again no clue (that I can see) of how you actually acheive this.... Confused

As I say, apologies for rant, but I've been trying to do this for an hour now and getting no where!! Stupid

mate calm down and ask politely and you will undoubtedly get some help theyre a really useful bunch of guys here they helped me loads recently

You need TomTom .ov2. The file will download as a zipfile. Use Windows Explorer to unzip the files to the map directory on your TomTom.

Right, selected that, and now it's giving me a load more options...

Consolidated by type
Single file with all cameras
Speed zoned complete

There are other choices too but these are the UK one which I guess is what I want (being UK based).

Which of these should I pick?

Sorry to be a dunce and I'm sure this is childs play stuff to you IT gurus, but I'm just a bloke trying to update speed cameras in his TomTom... Crying or Very sad

Keenster, many thanks, I'll have a look.

I find this kind of thing so frustrating cos it's probably a 2 min job once you know what you're doing but when you're just presented with a load of choices and nothing more than "download the database" in the instructions it's so hard to figure out what on earth to do... Confused

i know i had a nightmare the other night myself!
got it all sorted in the end
only had the tomtom over 2 years and still struggle with basics!

connect the go to the computer and open veiw the go as you would a camera storage card at the top of the screen go to TOOLS then FOLDER OPTIONS, then select VEIW in that list you will see an option that says SHOW HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS and click in the circle next to it and click ok then leave the window open or mimimize it only as youll need it later on

next create a new folder in MY DOCUMENTS on you pc called this something like go700 backup. land open the floder you have just created eave this window open on the desk top and bring the go 700's window to the top of everything else

in the go 700 window hightlight everything in there and i mean everything copy and paste this to the folder your go700 backup folder after the pc has moved everything across to the back up folder. close the back up folder window.

now down load the tomtom database
you can hav any of the files there on the page is a discription of what each file constists of for now we will go for the all in one file as it easiest

download this file and save it to your my documents forder on the pc
then upzip it
open to the folder that has been up zipped you will see some files that consist of .ov2 and .bmp files

copy these files and paste these files to the MAP folder in the go700 window the map folder is where the map is stored on the hard drive of the go700

Alix that's brilliant, thanks for that, backing up as I type this Thumbs Up

Then once that's done I'll have a go at downloading the database and pulling it onto TomTom.

Presumably the backup means that if it all goes horribly wrong then I can just wipe TomTom and drag all the old (backed up) stuff back on?

I fancy getting it so that it warns me of the type of camera, or even with the speed limit as well, is that going to over complicate things?? Confused

not really the speed zoned ones are just more poi catagories to set up the single file is just easiest

settings manage poi then warn when near poi slect sound or download ogg sounds and put them in to the map folder then just selct the distance
