This is just my opinion....

The end result should be the same - it is just the loading method.

If you are confident with the idea of copying and pasting files using standard Windows techniques, then the .ov2 way is simple, and easy to see what you are doing.

TomTom introduced "Home" in an attempt to simplify the process of updating software for non-technically minded people and probably in an attempt to tie users into using only TomTom's own addons.
However the actual process is now hidden from the user, and while this may suit some people, it drives me mad...

Finally, in order to use the "Home" method, you STILL have to put the downloaded cab files into the right place for Home to find them! This just seems to be an extra step, when you could have put the .ov2 files in the right place anyway in one move.

So, to sum up, I'd stick with the .ov2 (and .bmp) file-copying method, especially if you've done it that way before.
