Question about Typhoon Myguide 3500

Wondering if anyone could help me with my query. Have just inherited a typhoon myguide 3500 (apparently a re-branded Mitac Mio 168). However, it will not work without being plugged into the mains. In addittion, whenever we input our data, turn it off and then turn it on again, all of this data is lost. We presume this means the battery is dead??
Now that the warranty has run out, we would like to try to install a new battery ourselves. Can anyone advise how to get into it as we've been told by typhoon in Germany that it is possible but there is a wire that will break and have to be reconnected. Has anyone done this and how difficult was it?
