Garmin connections "driving" me crazy

I just got my Garmin ique m3 in the mail. I was so excited, only to find out that my D: driver does not read the DVD (not CD) that came with the unit for software. So I was able to use my dtr's computer to load the unit, however the computer will not recognize the device (please bear in mind that I am a complete beginner). So after wasting aprox 140 minutes of my life of the phone with tech support, they think it is a cable issue. Does this sound feasable? They are sending me a cable out, but I am fairly certain that is not going to be the end of the problem.

They could be right, i also thought all cables were the same but am reliabley informed otherwise. Wait and try it first.
