i've installed the software.
can someone help and tell me where to put the maps?what folder to create and where to put it etc.

The Map Folder goes into the Root of the SD Card. If you have a TomTom Map CD set, it will put it into the correct Folder.
The Maps name changes according to which Map you have.
If I may say so, it seems a strange request to make if you have the genuine Software and Maps. 8O

on a similar note is it possible to use local folders on your device to store regional maps and have navigator function ok?

Do you mean as in City Maps? In which case yes.
You can't split up the main Country Specific Maps into areas anyway.

You would need a lot of memory for a Map. Like I said TT's Maps can't be split up.
