Man, I don't know how you Winduhs guys stand this. {To intro this, I've run Linux (Debian) exclusively for 7 years}

I just bought a new 4700, and my first impulse is to upgrade the OS. You would think a manufacturer's upgrade of the OS is well thought-out and tested by HP and MS developers, although my experience with a 3950 5 years ago showed otherwise.

Anyway, I had this new 4700 with WM2003Fe, and I wanted the latest WM2003Se, which fixed all the problems, right? So I DLed the SP29841.exe and followed the directions. I had Outlook and Activestync installed, and since there were no directions in the upgrade, clicked on hpRUU.exe . It went through some machinations, and after ~30 minutes said the connection had failed. I found my IPaq's backlight had gone off, and it showed a screen that said "HP Serial". It appears to be the bootloader. No matter what I do, I now cannot get past this bootloader. And the update utility does not recognize the IPaq any more.

So my brand-new IPaq hx4700 is bricked... my punishment for trying to bring the OS to the newest version.

Has anyone else successfully 'upgraded' to WM2003Se, or am I the only sucker? What could I have possibly done wrong? Maybe I should flee to Opie. Winduhs has consistently brought teh suck for >8 years, and shows no signs of improving.

Wink Maybe you were lucky.

I just got instructions from (kind-hearted) Alexandre Boeglin on the Opie listserv. I need to buy an SD adapter for my notebook, and will then try them.

HP just suggests a soft and hard reset, which of course I'd already tried. The OS is dusted.

I think you mean the OS? If so yes, this is exactly what I was doing when this happened. I was trying to upgrade to Winduhs2003 Second Edition, from First.

M$ calling this a "ROM" is inaccurate. It's actually a firmware image, which goes into flash not ROM. Evil or Very Mad

Then there's also the bootloader, which apparently comes from HP. Mine is v1.01, and this is the only thing I can reach now. Is this what you mean? There's no apparent way to upgrade the bootloader, if I'm supposed to have 1.10.

Found this fix buried in a HP discussion thread. Thanks to Bernie - no need to throw away your 470x after using the sp29841.exe download.

I'm posting this in case anyone experiences an issue updating their 470x ROM.

During the install process, the ROM installer resets the 4700 into bootloader mode: the screen backlight goes off, and there is some lettering that basically says HP and a progress bar. The indicator lights will also shut down, and ActiveSync doesn't appear to be engaged.

Here's my environment:

Active Sync 4.0 - appears very stable and no issues so far
iPAQ 4705 - Full battery.

Installed from desktop running Windows 2000.

1. I ensured that I was installing ROM 1.10 by confirming that I had SP29841.exe

2. After the first failure, I rebooted my TP and shut down all programs. It was plugged into AC power, and my 470x was cradled to ensure a continuous power source. Previously, I'd tried to use a sync cable.

3. I then reconnected the 470x to my desktop and started the upgrade process again. I did this by reinstalling the ROM update on my desktop - uncompressing the file, etc. - and letting it find and analyze the ROM on the 470x. You may see a "??" for current ROM version. Don't worry about it, as it's in boot mode.

4. You'll then be prompted to continue, and should select "Next" or whatever language version you're using.

5. To my surprise, the upgrade kicked off again, and slowly went from "0.1%), to "1.0%", to "1.1%", etc.

6. I did a soft reset of the 470x and it came up without any issues. I confirmed it was the correct version by checking Windows Media Player and confirming that it was WMP 10. It was, and I've had no issues with the upgrade.

7. I've been reinstalling my programs and where possible, am putting them all in the iPAQ "File Store".
