I had the same initial problems; black screens, errors messages... But eventially got it working at the end :D ...
You need to check and make sure few things are in place... Hope this makes sense... here goes...
1) Directory paths for all the files in the DATA.ZIP should be exactly the same as the original DATA.ZIP file! When you zip it back up after editing the menus_320_240.ui file, check that this is the case. (Winzip lets you zip it up with full path info).

Hi
today I got upto here that I changed the default.vis file and after saving, I created the DATA.ZIP on my PC. I then put this DATA.ZIP where it all belongs in mio via BT. After this, MIO map did not start and gave an error message. So I too deleted this new DATA.ZIP and replaced it with the original one.It all definitely lies with how the zip was packed. My question is:- how shall I zip the folder with the changed file, so that mio gets fooled(dir. structure and paths)
I am no winzip expert ;-), so a little detail shall help.
and this brings me to the next question.
all these fixing stuff that we are doing(fast flyover bug fixes, easy route etc.), how does it all ammount to when we will be all downloading the new 3.2 in september. Will there be a crash in the system since the files are hacked, or will 3.2 just overwrite the underlaying files, or will we have to revert to factory settings(like all the files that came with the packet). I know this is unanswerable right now, since no one's seen the new stuff, but I was wondering. |

Are you guys using the data.zip file that I originally provided?
I've personally 'converted' around half a dozen 510e's owned by friends of mine and they all work perfectly, every time.
The trick is definitely in the zipping. The file MUST be edited in place - it's best to use a program called 7zip (free) - it actually has an option to edit in place without unzipping the file first.
If you unzip to a folder, make your edit and then re-zip, you are almost certainly going to have problems. I'm not sure exactly why that is but I suspect (according to a friend) that as the program is reading a zipped file, re-zipping is changing the byte order and therefore it's rendered unreadable.
If you stick to editing in place, it will work! _________________ ---------------------------

I'm still foxed.
what exactly does it mean to say "editing in place"
I mean, I see the data.zip via "bluesoleil" on the PC.
copy the file to my PC , edit on pc, zip on pc and then bring it back .
Now this does not work and we all agree.
by saying "editing in place", do you mean that I edit the file in mio(via bluesoleil). so no copy to pc etc.If that's so, then would it be just dubble clicking the file in the ftp section of bluesoleil, editing and again saving it there? |

Editing in place does not mean edit in the mio!
Editing in place means that you edit the file that you want to edit (menus_320_240.ui) within DATA.ZIP while the zip file is still compressed. 7-zip will let you do that.
What you infact do is the equivalent to keyhole surgery - edit in place.
You must not unzip data.zip first and then edit it. Editing must be done while DATA.ZIP whilst it's still zipped up.
Download 7zip and try it - you'll see what I mean! _________________ ---------------------------

Ravi,
I tried your file but it came up with the same error as before – Black Screen of Death.
I got it working in the end though.
1 copying DATA.ZIP and save a copy as back up
2 unzip it to the desktop in a folder called Data
3 open the .ui file, alter and save it (notepad)
4 zip the contents of “Data” up into a new DATA.ZIP (method zip, compression normal). This is where I was going wrong I think. If you are not careful you can easily zip the folder “Data” which doesn’t work.
You end up with the following file structure in DATA.ZIP
DATA.ZIP
Data
Xxxxx
Xxxxx
Xxxxx
Instead of
DATA.ZIP
Xxxxx
Xxxxx
Xxxxx
Hope that helps. _________________ Cheers,

I was just explaining how I did the edit just in case someone else wanted to try it! This was the way I did the original edit. _________________ ---------------------------

Can someone list the edit for this Easy route option. I've followed the links back and end up at another forum PDAMILL. I don't really want to register and subscribe for yet another forum. I've lost count of the number of forums I've registered with for a one time access. _________________ Reg |
