I take it all back
Traffic has been awful today on the same roads that on Monday were pretty impressive. Also, a completely different route (to the same place) tonight and I spent most of the journey (all motorway) without traffic.
I'm back to not impressed... |

Perhaps the traffic system was down, is there no way to contact the transmitter service and check what the state of play is concerning coverage and outages. |

No, it would work for short periods, and then not show anything for half an hour or so (either just showing roadworks, or worse a single hold up). The times it worked it certainly had sufficient data for me to be happy the overall service was up.
This was also from early afternoon through to late into the evening, which would be a long time for the service to be down.
To be honest, I've suffered enough good traffic, and enough bad traffic to be confident that I can tell the difference between a complete service outage and bad reception. |

I have finally purchased my 310D from Hal fords (yesterday and saved £100) and have a few questions if you guys could answer.
1) What size SD card do people recommend. I might play a bit f music from the unit and would like to download all the euro maps if possible.
2) What speed camera database does every one use. Do I have to subscribe to Garmins database or am I right in thinking there is one with this site I can use.
3) Where do I sign up for this new cable/charger etc that's supposed to fix the TMC problems.
4) Do I need to register for TMC or should it come up when I plug it in.
Thanks in advance for any help |

It's generally recommended at the moment that the Nuvi will accept a 2Gb SD card without problems, whereas only certain 4Gb cards work. However, 2Gb will not get a lot of music *and* a lot of maps installed onto it.
I have a 2Gb card, with 1Gb of music, leaving me 1Gb of space for maps, although I have a lot less at present, as I rarely travel abroad at the moment.
You will either have to pay Garmin for theirs, or PGPSW here for theirs. My personal preference is for PGPSW at the moment, as although it offers slightly less features, it seems more complete, and offers a facility for you to provide updates.
The new charger is only available from Garmin, once they have gone through some troubleshooting - remember, it does work for some, so you might not need it.
The TMC should just work when plugged in. However, you may find it's best to update the firmware in the Nuvi to ensure it works as best it can.

You put your left hand in, left hand out, in, out, in, out....
Oh yes - just spoken to Garmin and guess what...Garmin US are still fixing the problem and the "final fix" cables are not as final as the dictionary definition would have you think.
Still, on we go....we do the hokey pokey and we turn around...
Anyone here believe anything Garmin say? |

Seriously, I don't believe it is (backed up by other comments here), although I'm wondering what else they can do to the car charger to fix it though... |

Well, the problem as I see it is I call Garmin repeatedly only to be told a different version of what I am sure is the "truth". I am not for a minute suggesting they are telling "mis-truths".
Thing is - with the Garmin at £299 in Halfords and the TomTom RDS TMC delayed until end October (called them yesterday) - do I:
1) Keep my cash and paper map
2) Buy a 310D and hope for a fix
3) Wait for a TomTom
4) Wait for the 660 (end of year!)
Problem with option 2 is (having called Halfords) they will sell me a 310D and then install it in my car. If TMC doesnt work they will try and rectify the situation with Garmin.
Oh-BTW - Garmin also claim they use Classic FM. They claim the problem with the UK is the signal sent out is much weaker than the EU/US and apparently the hills and topography in the UK get in the way of the FM signal.
BOSH. |
