Please can someone help me...

My father in law, a HGV driver, is ringing me every day (sometimes twice a day) as he wants me to find him a Sat Nav for his lorry.
He drives the UK mainly but has tramped in Europe.

He has a budget of around 400. Some of the extra bits would be nice - Bluetooth, MP3 etc.

I have narrowed the choices to TomTom, Mio C510 or C710, Sony U50 or my personal choice Garmin Nuvi 310D (with added TMC).

He would need the Low Bridge POI.

Please can someone give me unbiased information about which model would be best for HGV???

You'll get loads of advice, but unbiased? Nope. Laughing

I like Garmin units so I would recommend the Nuvi, switch it to the "Truck" routing mode and always use the "Quickest" routing option rather than the "shortest" and it will try to stick to major roads.

I have used a mate's TomTom a few times and I quite like it too, but I don't think they have a specific HGV routing preference.

Don't get CoPilot - In my opinion it's junk and there are serious problems with it.

Remember that any Sat Nav system will not be 100% perfect. They will sometimes send you down roads that are not suitable, the traffic reports aren't 100% reliable and you will lose reception in some areas (tunnels and when surrounded by tall buildings).

I'm sure that plenty of other people here will have recommendations for you too. Some of them even drive HGVs. Good luck deciding! Thumbs Up

well having used most of whats available on the market it go with any of the three units named

i have to admit i have used the new mio units and havent see them in action but i have used th pocketpc version of iGO its routing is good but im not sure whether the low bridge databases will support the mio unit. the mio unit do come with free tmc aswell

garmin the truck routing is ok but not fool proof but as long the unit has a browse map function then you should be ok with it though any poi databases will mostlikely need converting for use .

tomtom if you can go for the 910 for as you get all you requirement met ie mp3 playback easy to find and put lowbridges on hint Use robin waltons there free Wink also you get an Mp3 player as well but maybe
slightly out of the price range also for the 910 a TMC receiver is in the pipline so you will get free traffic. you will need to set the routing preference on the 910 to limited speed at 54mph

copilot ill go with skippy on that personally for hgv use it just doesnt cut it sorry alk.

as already said if think of it more as a moving map rather than a satnav any of the units will do fine

just remember do a back up before letting your dad loose with it and make him read the manual for it too

i use the tom tom 910 i think its the bees knees. when i went to the expo in edinburgh, i spoke to tom tom and they said that hgv routing was in the pipeline as a lot of hgv drivers are using tom toms. like everyone else says no system is fool proof as yet. but remember to check out the phone compatability first for bluetooth. hope this helps. Wink
