Universal tool for making your own maps

Hi All,
I've been doing a bit of digging around on the net and found this site http://www.gpsinformation.org/adamnewham/article1/gpsmapper.htm

It all sounds fairly straight forward but as a newbie I may be talking pants ( it wouldn't be the first time) Can any of you more advanced guys say if this is a decent utility or not ?

well, define "decent" ...

It is a grass roots way of producing maps, and as such it is laudable. Anything that breaks the mapping monopoly (duopoly) is good. It just doesn't have critical mass yet to be of much use. Classical chicken/egg problem it seems.
