The question is more rhetorical than anything, as I think I will go and buy a Tomtom 510, but then again the reviews say the mount is awful. I look through these forums, and I spot the Mitac Mio P550 for about the same price in a bundle from the highly-praised GPSforLess, and it also has a full-featured PPC PDA with WiFi and Bluetooth.

I'm just dipping my toes in the water as far as GPS and SatNav are concerned and to be brutally honest, I don't really need one - but I am an unashamed 60-year old gadget freak. I'm driving to Germany in November and I want to be able to surf the Autobahne and drive into those medieval German cities without tying myself in navigational knots.

So what do I do - I quite like the Garmin Nuvi as well - why the heck did all the manufactureres decide to bring out new products all at once?

And how am I going to justify spending £300+ to the Mrs? After all, that could have kept her in shoes and make-up for at least 3 months.

I’ve been using a PDA (HP4700) with Tom Tom 5 installed, along with the speed camera database. You sound much like myself; it’s really just a rather useful toy. The advantages are trips to new destinations are strife and stress free, my management team seems to appreciate this as much as I do. A good selling point.
Don’t be put off by the mounts offered by Tom Tom, I have a Brodit mount on a proclip fitting which is very good from the point of view of firmness and position on the dashboard. The mount fits the technology and the proclip is specifically designed for each car.

Have a look at http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/tomtomv6.php and http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/item-menu.php?idSubCat=36

I can recommend the Brodit fittings (I’m not in the business)

Cheers

I have heard from a few people that Tomtom is reissuing mounts that work better than the originals. It sounds like they are aware of the weakness, and are working to fix it - always a good sign.

Hi Peasemold...

Mio C510E and Navman ICN530 are really worth checking out!
There are lot cheaper than TomTom units and come with European maps with lots of other useful features thrown in.

I know how you feel, I'm jus turned 65 and, like you a gadget freak, all I've done with mine is set it to show me the way to and from my business which I have driven twice a day for the past 22 year. So as you can see I really, need a Sat Nav. I have just bought a Garmin Nuvi 300 which I find mind blowing, a proper toy for boys. I like you just could not decide, what made my mind up in the end was a friend told me that Garmin is the top marine sat nav system, my line of tought is it is well tested so thats the one for me. So what ever one you pick enjoy.
