Grumpy, dont part with your money until you've seen the Mio C710 C510E. It's now being sold in the US with US maps and the maps are available separately too. I've just bought the 510E and I have to say that it's head and shoulders above the Nuvi and Tomtoms. Check these out :

Also go to the support section and download the manual. It will give you an idea what these things are about.

Hope this helps

Ravi,

It looks good, more like the kind of system I was looking for.

My problem is that I need a system that has USA maps loaded before leaving the UK such that we can set routes in th UK and then navigate directly from the airport to hotel/place of work. Last time on such a visit (different location) got lost in New York - not much fun. So my problem is getting the system in my hands getting the maps, playing with it a little all within the next 10 days!

Couldn't see from your links anywhere were you could buy the North America maps and if it is like Garmin, they won't export to the UK anyway.

Getting desperate

Hi!
I think that there's 'dealers' or' retails' list on the US website. It may be worth a look to see who's selling it in the US and approach them directly.

As far as I know, Halfords only have the 'normal' 310 at £299 and the 310D (deluxe) for £399.
The 310D has the TMC receiver and Euro maps on DVD but only UK maps in internal memory so you need to buy an SD card (like I have) to store euro maps on the unit.
The 'normal' 310 has no Euro maps and no TMC.
There is no £250 Nuvi in Halfords.

All 310's have bluetooth.

Ravi

Thanks for the clarification Ravi.

As I mentioned the prices and Nuvi range were from memory. Too be honest, I had a hell of a time buying from Halfords, because the sales staff at the superstore I went to didn't have a clue what they were selling.

Halfords gave me the different prices for the 300, 310 and 310D (which didn't relate to anything I had seen on the internet), and so I had to ask them to physically pull the boxes out of their secure store room ,and read the manuals, to see what each had in terms of functionality for the money. Even getting Halfords to do this much was like pulling teeth.

Anyway, I got there in the end with the 310D which I am very pleased with on the most part.

Does the sticky on loading free maps from different parts of the world not apply to people who want to use maps for UK and USA on their Nuvi? Just wondering as I haven't looked into the details of it yet.

Now we know why you picked bootruss as a yousername Thumbs Up .
If i go into a shop to buy a specialised item i would ask for someone who knows the product. A lot of staff at weekends are part time and no way are they going to know one end of a satnav from the other.

I would tend to agree on the weekend staffing point. The only thing I would suggest is that staff refrain from using the term "Specialist" when referring to their electrical items section staff.

I was hovering about the satnav display area but no one was about, so after a few minutes, I went to the check-out counter to ask someone for help. They pointed me back to the electricals section again and said "there will be a specialist there to help you soon".

Now I must admit the staff at my local Halfords are usually very helpful (even at weekends), but alas it was a completely different experience when discussing electronic items.

I knew that I wanted the Nuvi 310D, but then I was thrown off track with the range of prices offered. The sales guy didn't know what was included for each price point. It was then I had to ask for the boxes/manuals for each one. Even then a nervous look flashed across the guys face at this request. I guess he thought I was going to steal them. Anyway, out of sheer determination I managed to get the empty boxes and manuals to look through.

Most people would have walked out, but with my technical head on and the ability to read I managed to figure out the options myself.

Thanks for letting me know this is an isolated experience.

Too be honest, the guy looked so demotivated I'm sure he didn't last long. Kicking his arse certainly wont help in this regard, although an interesting offer :D

Not meaning to sound flippant, but perhaps product training would help staff feel more confident. Even giving part time weekend staff some kind of product literature to hand-out or read might help.

Cheers!
