I'm soon off to France - my 256MB can only store France (without Paris) and then give me room for a couple of POI. The moving of the maps from CD to SD card (Kingston SD 256Mb) was a long process (35-45 min), would a certain brand of SD be faster then the other ?

Thanks
Nige

It always takes a long time with ActiveSync, and as far as I know there is no other way with SmartST.

As to speed, most SD Card's are going to be faster than ActiveSync.

Hi
There is another way to transfer maps using active sync & SmartST. Purchase a card reader, they are not that expensive. It takes only a matter of seconds compared with the slow process, linking you iCN to SmartST.
All I have to say is if you purchase a large SD card, get one with very fast Read Write speeds, I use a PNY 1 GB 133 X speed card without ant problems.
Just returned from South of France. Loaded on it is all UK, France, Netherlands, and Ferry routes, all of my POI’s, with loads of space for more.
I took a backup SD card with France only on it but never had to use it.
Have a good trip, have a look at my old posts this topic has been covered in great depth.
Regards
DRP

Thanks for the info, DRP. Obviously your 1GB card worked OK, but I was under the impression the maximum allowed with the 530 was 512Mb....

Was it that you didn't fill the 1GB card above 512MB, or am I mistaken about the 512MB limit?

Hi
Just put the Sd card into the card reader to find out how much memory is used up. It has 677MB used.
I cannot comment on the 530 but the 510/20 will take a 1GB card, as long as it’s a fast card. Navman have always quoted that 512 MB is the limit. Perhaps its because the read write speed of the software has something to do with it. I have a slow 512 card which dose cause problems when a lot of maps are stored on it.

I use a normal Sandisk 1 GB SD card (not high speed) with my 530 and was able to install all the maps of western europe on the device (512 MB flash memory + 1 GB SD card). So far I didn't experience any problems.

I use a 1Gb Sandisk Ultra II that folds in half and plugs directly into the USB port, if you connect the 530 into another port SmartST recognises the card as a PC Removable Media. Loaded on it is the whole of France and Germany, belguim, Holland, Austria, Switzerland and Luxembourg + the ferriy routes and 14 POI leaving 349Mb.

If your in the UK Currys where selling these for £29.99. The card which has a read/write speed of 10/9mb per second also works with the 520.

I also have iCN530 with SP1 loaded but I cannot get an 1GB SanDisk to work.
I loaded the EU Maps on it via a normal programmer but when I put the SanDisk card in the iCN530 it is not recognized.

Does anybody have some tips ?

Cheers

I have been using a 512 MB Kingston Elite Pro which I got from www.choicestationery.com for a good price. It has worked very well for me. I've loaded all of France, Belgium, Holland and most of Germany with no problems, and mapping/routing is seamless. :D

I have a feeling that I had read that the 530 could only take a maximum of a 512MB card, so perhaps the unreliability with certain 1GB cards is not necessarily due to the card itself? Question

I had an email from the NavMan support team saying that the 1GB card is not supported but they recommend (as most likely to work) the 1Gb from SANDisk.
Which I have but it is not working, so I hope somebody can give me some tips on how to get this to work.

cheers

What does this mean exactly?

I have loaded my maps successfully to a 1GB Sandisk Card performing the following steps:

1. Put the SD card into a card reader. Format it with FAT32.
2. Connect iCN to Computer via USB.
3. Insert Map CD.
4. Start SmartST software. SmartST should recognize the SD card in the card reader.
5. After selecting the maps to install, you have the choice between installing to iCN and installing to SD card.

Alternatively you can put the card directly into the iCN before connecting, but loading maps to the card via USB 1.1 through the iCN is usually much slower than via an USB 2.0 card reader.

The cheapest reliable place I have found for SD cards is www.mymemory.com
they are based in the channel islands so in effect you get the items VAT free and delivery is very quick

Hi All !!

I have a PiN 300 (SmartST v3) and have been using a PQI SD card x 45 for over 12 months with no apparent problems (apart from not allowing enough free space when loading my POIs to the SD. my fault as I use SD for storing MYPOI files).

I suppose what I have maintained during the operation of my system, is that I keep only the maps / sections of maps turned on that will be of interest at the time (eg. if not venturing into Belgium, Holland, Switzerland, southern france or norther Germany I disable these in the settings).

From experience it seems the speed of the SD card is perhaps of more importance rather than size. I am comtemplating moving to a 2 GB or 4 GB SD (speed x133) on next trip to Europe so as I can get more POI's onto SD plus complete set of maps (although will maintain the disabling of map areas that I will not be using).

Best Regards,
Denis Green
