OK, this is sad but we're going on a cruise this summer and I plan on using my GPS to record the route the ship takes. Most of the time it will only be on over night when the ship moves but there are a couple of times when it will be on for 36 hours. I notice MM has a default setting for the maximum number of points it stores (4000 I think).
Is there a way to tell it just to keep recording i.e. unlimited?

Are there any other problems I might enconter?

I'm running the latest Memory Map on an IPAQ 2210 using a Navman 4100 Bluetooth GPS receiver. I will be powering them both from the mains so that won't be a problem.

TIA
Magrat.

Hi,

If you want a definitive answer, try the Memory Map Support forum here.

However, you can simply change the maximum number of points by editing the digits in the box. But it can never be "unlimited" because the data will eventually fill the internal RAM and maybe crash the PPC (and lose your track data). I think the file may only be written to the SD card when the MM program is exited (properly).

However, if you only want to log the position of the ship, then one point every 60 seconds should be more than enough to record the track. Then, the 4000 points will last more than 60 hours.

Cheers, Alan.

Also, you will not (next to the MAX POINTS) is an option for either WRAP or DECIMATE. These refer to what the program does if you reach the maximum number of points. In WRAP, the program will take one trackpoint from the beginning of the track for each that it adds to the end. Thus, the beginning of the track starts to disappear. In DECIMATE, when the max number is reached, the program removes every other trackpoint. So, if you set the max for 4000 points, at 4001 the program deletes half of the points putting you back at 2000. It then continues to track normally. When it reaches 4001 again, it does the same thing. This keeps your starting portion of the track, but each time it "decimates", it reduces the detail of the starting portion, as every other original point is taken away.

Mine is set to 40,000 points max and I have used it on 6 hours trips with an update interval of 1s /1m which was over 20,000 points. I never checked to see if it recorded this many points.

It is probably also a good idea to set a minimum update distance which on a ship could be 100 meters as you would probably need no more accuracy than this. Then you would record one point every time you moved 100m so in 100Km you would use 1000 points.
