This is a very dumb question but do the navigation software products,
such as Mapopolis, for Pocket PC have the ability to use the same
software to navigate on a laptop PC? I will be using a "mouse type"
GPS device connected to either my laptop or PPC serial port. Do I need
to buy 2 different software products to map with my laptop and PPC?
I would much rather, obviously, only purchase one.
Thanks.

It's not a dumb question, quite a valid one really. Most of the GPS Software companies only have software available on the Pocket PC and not PC. The Operating Systems are different, so there's no way to run a PPC program on a PC or vice versa as they have to be programmed differently and compiled differently.

Some companies do create software for the PC, you could use AutoRoute, but it's a fairly weak contender on the PC using GPS. Your best bet would be InfoMap Navigator as this gives voice directions, it's available at http://www.directions.ltd.uk or you could go with something like CoPilot PC 7 or Destinator for the PC.

I have noticed that there are alot of good systems for the PDA but not for the PC/Laptop. After doing some reasearch I found this site that seems to offer very good software at reasonable price.

Thanks to all for your help. I will take a look at the suggestions
mentioned.

How is "Microsoft Streets & Trips" as GPS navigation software?

Pretty poor compared to the current front runners. Streets and Trips / Pocket Streets basically will pinpoint your position on the map, but that's about it. It won't do any navigation, routing, re-routing, voice navigation etc.

For laptop use, I'm looking at:

Delorme Street Atlas
PocketNav

I'm finding it very difficult to find laptop GPS navigation software with the
basic features like autoroute and voice. There are plenty of PPC solutions.

I looked briefly into Copilot but found that the software package usually
included the GPS receiver, which I don't need. Also, I found that it was
quite pricey.

I'm looking into this product called Routis/iGuidance which runs on both
laptops and PPC's.
