@nim1206 - I believe this will only work on the GO line and not the Palm, PocketPC, or Mobile line. I don't think they sell the Nokia N series in the USA, so I'm sorta talking out of my posterior here, but I suspect that you can get another video player for the Nokia N70. I believe TCPMP (The Core Pocket Media Player) has a version that will work on your phone -- it's a really nice player and it's freeware.

As for the "why?" question, I migrated from a Palm based TomTom navigation system to an all-in-on GO700. Since I did that, I don't always bring my Palm with me, and I use my Palm for general PDA functions, but also MP3s and movies. It is nice that the TomTom GO line can now play movies, just like it's nice that the new GOX10 line plays MP3s, photos, movies, iPod interface, etc. Trust me, there are plenty of people who would ask "Why have a handsfree phone feature on a navigation system?" as well. It's all a matter of preference when it comes to what you want your car toy to be capable of doing.

Personally, for me, since I'm going to be carrying my TomTom GO700 with me when at a local shopping mall, etc. (rather than leaving it in the oven hot car or risking it getting stolen -- I live in Florida, USA), it might as well serve an additional purpose with it's fully charged 4-hour battery: the kiddies would love to watch a movie or two on it, and it would keep their interest while the adults are shopping or whatever. Is this the primary reason why I bought the TTG700? No, but it's a nice bonus feature. Admittedly, though, I would usually just use my Palm (which I usually do have with me at all times) for playing multimedia stuff.

Oh, and notice that this software has a US$ pricetag -- that alone should tell you that the reason they have a video cutoff while driving option is purely for legal reasons. The USA definitely does their part to employ the world's lawyers! :D

Hey, I just threw $32 at this because in my opinion....ya just can't have enough portable media players... ;)

Anyhoo...anyone else who has bought this, did you customize your TomTom menus, too? I added my own tomtom.mnu file to the SDKRegistry folder to customize the appearance of the menus, but because of this the Media Studio Player install did not add the 4th menu page and put its icon in there. When I remove my tomtom.mnu file, I do get the 4th menu page and the icon, but then I'm back to TomTom's undesireable menu organization. I don't own a Bluetooth phone or use TomTom Plus services, so having these on the first two menu pages is a waste of space for me.

So, does anyone know how to call the Media Studio Player app from a tomtom.mnu file?

add another TASK_SDKx into the menu file. x being 1, 2, 3 etc depending on how many external programs you use.

You cannot influence which x will be assigned to the media player though (one of the many oversights in the TomTom SDK) - unless you know what "touch" means in Unix speak.

Unfortunately, I simply referred to ScaredyCat's instructions from the link at www.SatNav-Shop.com to customize the menu, and...well...I have pretty much zero understanding of what you said above.

For example, my tomtom.mnu file is:

Code:
MENUBLOCK|BLOCK_MAIN|BTM_GPS_POSITION|
MENUPAGE|TASK_PAGE1|Main Menu 1 of 3|
MENUITEM|TASK_NAVIGATE_TO|
MENUITEM|TASK_MENU_FIND_ALTERNATIVES|
MENUITEM|TASK_CONFIRM_DELETE_ROUTE|
MENUITEM|TASK_ADD_FAVORITE|
MENUITEM|TASK_MENU_PREFERENCES|
MENUITEM|TASK_PAGE2|
MENUPAGE|TASK_PAGE2|Main Menu 2 of 3|
MENUITEM|TASK_MENU_PLAN_ATOB|
MENUITEM|TASK_SHOW_MAP|
MENUITEM|TASK_MENU_ROUTE_INSTRUCTIONS|
MENUITEM|TASK_MENU_PHONE|
MENUITEM|TASK_ITINERARY|
MENUITEM|TASK_PAGE3|
MENUPAGE|TASK_PAGE3|Main Menu 3 of 3|
MENUITEM|TASK_SHOW_WEATHER|
MENUITEM|TASK_MENU_DOWNLOAD|
MENUITEM|TASK_MENU_TRAFFIC|
MENUITEM|TASK_TUTORIAL|
MENUITEM|TASK_SHOW_GPS_STATUS|
MENUITEM|TASK_PAGE1|

I added the following right before the last line to create a fourth page:

Code:
MENUITEM|TASK_PAGE4|
MENUPAGE|TASK_PAGE4|Main Menu 4 of 4|

... as well as changed all the "Main Menu X of 3" to "Main Menu X of 4". Howver, I have no idea what to put as the "TASK_" because I have no idea what the actual app is called. Also, wouldn't this be an external app to the TomTom app, so wouldn't I need to route it through some sort of external/exit command type of thing?

In answer to the obvious -- no, I know very little of Unix, but I am very fluent in command line syntax having started my network engineer career using MS-DOS and Novell Netware (so I'm not a young GUI type of person). I just haven't felt the need (or had the career requirement) to get into Unix.

The desktop converter app installs the Player app on TomTom the first time you do a conversion. The only thing that seems to install are three binaries (GUI, MPLAYER, and MPLAYERGUI) and then it installs an mplayergui.cap file in the SDKRegistry folder with the contents being:

Code:
Version|100|
AppName|gui|
AppPath|/mnt/sdcard/mplayer/|
AppIconFile|none.bmp|
AppMainTitle|movie player|
AppPort|2001|
COMMAND|CMD||none.bmp|Player|

If any of this looks like anything other than Greek to you (unless you are Greek!), I'd appreciate any suggestions you may have. Otherwise, I'll just wait for a response from the developer, which better not be, "You can't run custom menus with this app installed" or they'll be issuing a refund. ;)

FYI, if you don't like the way the Video Player starts up every time you boot you TomTom GO 700 (and then you have to exit it to get to the Nav functions), just browse your 700's hard drive, find the file "TTN" in the root directory, and simply delete it. Then your 700 will start up as normal, and you can always run the video player from page 4 of the menu.

The file is called "ttn" (Linux is case sensitive)

Try this

Code:

MENUBLOCK|BLOCK_MAIN|BTM_GPS_POSITION|
MENUPAGE|TASK_PAGE1|Main Menu 1 of 4|
MENUITEM|TASK_NAVIGATE_TO|
MENUITEM|TASK_MENU_FIND_ALTERNATIVES|
MENUITEM|TASK_CONFIRM_DELETE_ROUTE|
MENUITEM|TASK_ADD_FAVORITE|
MENUITEM|TASK_SDK1|
MENUITEM|TASK_PAGE2|
MENUPAGE|TASK_PAGE2|Main Menu 2 of 4|
MENUITEM|TASK_MENU_PLAN_ATOB|
MENUITEM|TASK_SHOW_MAP|
MENUITEM|TASK_MENU_ROUTE_INSTRUCTIONS|
MENUITEM|TASK_MENU_PHONE|
MENUITEM|TASK_ITINERARY|
MENUITEM|TASK_PAGE3|
MENUPAGE|TASK_PAGE3|Main Menu 3 of 4|
MENUITEM|TASK_SHOW_WEATHER|
MENUITEM|TASK_MENU_DOWNLOAD|
MENUITEM|TASK_MENU_TRAFFIC|
MENUITEM|TASK_TUTORIAL|
MENUITEM|TASK_SHOW_GPS_STATUS|
MENUITEM|TASK_PAGE4|
MENUPAGE|TASK_PAGE4|Main Menu 4 of 4|
MENUITEM|TASK_MENU_PREFERENCES|
MENUITEM|TASK_PAGE1|

I think you get the idea.

Lutz,

Ah, I though in your previous message that "SDKX" was the variable -- not just the "X". Painfullly obvious now!

Works like a charm now. Thank you very much!

For anyone else trying this, if you leave just one task on the new page 4, you're goign to get a page 4 that has just two big buttons centered on the screen. If you add the following to your page 4...

Code:
MENUITEM|TASK_EMPTY|
MENUITEM|TASK_EMPTY|
MENUITEM|TASK_EMPTY|
MENUITEM|TASK_EMPTY|
MENUITEM|TASK_EMPTY|

...you'll end up with the icons/buttons where they should be (one icon in upper left-hand corner and the arrow taking your around to page 1 will be in the bottom right-hand corner. I hope this makes sense.

No, this is for Linux only.

(You can still convert the videos on the PC, and then watch them with a movie player on the Nokia if that one understands the codec.

Doesn't TCPMP work on the Nokia N series? If it does then PocketDivxEnc (free) and TCPMP (free) should do the job for you.

Hi!

I'm using this for music videos on my 500.
Does anybody know if there is a way to have a 'playlist'? It would certainly be handy Smile

I'm pretty sure there isn't a playlist feature. I did try copying both Ogg Vorbis and MP3 files to the media folder to see if it could play either one of those as well, but it can't. What it did do was prevent the display of any file (movie or music) after the first MP3 or Ogg file, for whatever reason.

Anyway, my point is that it's not really designed to be a music player. You may want to send the suggestion to Makayama support though -- they responded very quickly to my questions.

Thanks for the quick response Chris.
I'll get in touch with them. It might be a "value added" enhancement if they can come up with one Smile
