Hello,

Does anyone know if you can get maps for South Africa as we're hoping to go there next year?

I've looked around the Tom Tom site but can't find anything as usual.

Thanks

Hmmm, I thought that might be the case.

I guess I'll have to invest in one of those new fangled paper things with coloured lines on them. Can't see it taking off myself Wink

Ah but I've got one that is smaller and more powerful and quicker and more accurate than anybody else's (and I've drawn all the cameras on in coloured pencil) - so do you want some advise? The only trouble is its voice commands (AKA the wife) are very shrill. Still she does provide an instant warning whenever you exceed the speed limit - accurate to a thousanth of a mile per hour.

In fact lets start a whole forum where we can compare and bore the pants of everybody. Wink

There are a number of applications that will let you show the GPS position on a map that you have scanned in to the PC, then loaded to the PDA, you have to go through a rather tedious callibration routine to align the map with known locations, but it will give you a moving map display, no navigation though.

About the best you could achieve is if you have pre-planned routes draw them on the scanned image on the PC using Paint Shop (or similar) before loading to the PPC.
GPSDash is one of many that can import scanned maps - Just a thought!

Been over to Cape Town in May, the only GPS navigation system I found was Handymap. http://www.handymap.co.za/Home/tabid/183/Default.aspx
You can download the programme and map of South Africa and try it free for fourteen days (just about the length of the average holday Wink )then you have the option to buy it if you want.
I used the 3D version on my Mio with no probs even though the site says this version is for the hw6500 Series only. Handymap Pro looks works very similar to the 3D version if you cant run the 3D version on your PPC. I did a full backup before I installed it first time so I could get used to the operation of the programme using the demo map that is included. It is similar to Co-Pilot. After that I wound back my PPC to a previous backup and the reinstalled Hanymap just before my holiday. It Is not as good as TomTom in my opinion but much better than a paper map.The only problem I had was that my ppc took ages to get a fix when I arrived in South Africa. but after that first time it locked on fairly quick.
