Got my new c710 this morning! Quite a few screens and menus! Maybe I should read the manual after all.
I'd like to collect in one place the acumulated wisdom on this forum with regards to the best settings. I'll trawl through the forum and paste links and answers to my own question as and when I find them but feel free to add.
In no particular order.
There is some mention here about the speed calculation happening in kph and not mph? There was also a solution, something to do with resetting the tolerance to 60%?
Keeping the English voice, it appears to skip back to the American one every so often. There is a work around for this somewhere?
Changing the voice to a downloaded one.
TMC I can't see any evidence for TMC on my c710. There are no screens or indications that it is, or isn't working. Can someone point me in the right direction?
I'll add as I think of any.

As default the system seems to not want ot accept a route that doesn't start with your current location (as per gps).
I found this work around
"It works if you turn off autorouting from Settings-General Settings-Off-route Recalculation(Disabled)."
Seems to work, not sure what effect htat has on normal use though. |

I found this
"In Miomap, if you go to Settings, Language and change the program language (not the voice) to a foreign language, it will tell you that the program will restart. Click Yes.
When it restarts (in your foreign language, I used German) do the same again but select your British language, it tells you again that the program will restart (in German this time), this time click on Ja.

To see the TMC status information, just touch the "GPS" icon on the right side of the map/navigation screen. From the GPS info page, click TMC, Settings, and then you'll see the currently active radio channel.
Prior to the settings screen you'll see a list of all recieved/interpreted messages, listed by distance from the current cursor position (i.e. not the current ACTUAL position, annoying)
The TMC works VERY poorly without the external antenna, though.

Fast Flyover
You've got to hold the main menu button down and then press flyover. Others have got it to work but not me!
Pressing hte main menu button just brings up the main menu. Keeping it pressed down from there and navigating to map-route-flyover and letting go or not letting go makes no difference - it just chugs along at snail speed.

Thanks mgrah, found it. Not that there is nything to see. The TMC doesn't appear to work at all - at least where I live (hertfordshire). If I go past the list of events to the settings screen all I see is the system "testing" with no lock on anything - ever. with or without the antenna plugged in.

As a PS question. Does the unit need to be plugged in to either the cigarette lighter/PC for the TMC to work?
I was trying it unplugged.

I ask because when I look at the the TMC settings when it is unplugged it seems to rush through the channels, whereas when it is plugged in it goes through them much, much slower.

I can understand that. The TMC information is broadcast by stations in the fM band. The receiver in the Mio scans through the band, stopping on every station to see if it can decode any TMC information. With just the internal or the single wire aerial provided, you have only half of an aerial/earth system and will only receive strong stations. If you connect to a mains power supply or a PC you have an effective earth and will get more stations - so taking longer to scan.

Ahhh!
I got a connection when it was hooked into the mains at home. Lost it in the car (my cigarette lighter is broken), then it came back for a few seconds then gone again. I don't suppose Ten 17 is really that strong a station 
On that, I thought it was only Classic FM that transmitted TMC? |

You will get a weaker signal inside the car, because of its screening. That's why car radios have external aerials. I believe some people have experimented with patching into the car radio aerial to pick up more signal.
I posted some info on the stations that Mio uses. Have a browse around and you should find it.
