Excuse my lack of knowledge if this question seems stupid.

My i3 has the UK and Eire loaded but apparently has maps of western europe. I have just bought an appartment in Murcia in Spain but although if I scroll out I can see Spain with roads showing I can't get the search to find either an address or even a town nearby. If I set off what will show on the screen when I hit mainland Europe??

Interesting question! I had assumed no current position shown on screen beyond detailed map area (northern France seems to be the limit) but if this is true why would main roads over the rest of Europe show on scrolling the map?

Has anyone tried it abroad?

When you head in to Europe beyond the coast it continues to show the main roads and your position relative to them. What you cannot do is search for addresses or route plan beyond the west of France or the channel ports.
In America with a UK i3(no US mapping) you can still add favourites but you can't navigate to them!!

So would I be able to follow my progress along the road but have to rely on old fashioned paper maps to get from where I know that I am to where I want to be?

The number of roads on the basemap is quite limited, but yes it would act as a guide to your position.

Not sure about the i3 but many Garmins have something called a "basemap" which is a rough map of major roads and cities. It's not very accurate, it might be 400 meters off in places. Some units will let you navigate using the basemap but it doesn't work well - motorway junctions are shown as a normal intersection for example.

Try and zoom in on Paris and see what's there.

I must say that I'm very surprised that there seems not to be uproar that the claimed (on the box) optional extra European maps on card are in fact not available and Garmin seem to have no idea when they will be. Indeed one wonders if they ever will appear.

Perhaps more people will be concerned as next year's holiday season looms!

Has anyone tried the maps that you can import?

If so what was the result and how did you do it?

I have City Select Europe V6 and Hungary's NaviGuide V4.1 as well as Romanian RO.A.D. 2005.

I can tell you that on a 512 Mb transflash card I have whole Romania, Hungary, Austria and Germany.

The i3 behaves very well - 3D navigation and stuff.

I don't know. For me is pretty difficult to ckeck it out (see my location :D )

For you is easier.

I just wanted to help, but please, if anyone tries it out, at least let me know.

If it were on e-bay then I would wonder, but the link is to GPS Warehouse and they appear to be a reputable organisation. I've visited their showroom near Heathrow and they have some serious kit on display and helpful staff.

I very much doubt that they are the sort of outfit to sell pirated software!
