Hello all, I am looking for some help here as I am slightly confused.
I recently bought my 610 for Xmas, and on the occasions that I have used it, I have had a couple of problems.
One isntance was when i was driving down a road towards a bend, and the unit told me to go straight on, however there was a house straight in front of me, so needless to say I followed the bend.
However I did notice that there was a road that actually came from the back of that house, and would have gone over the A1(M).
It looks as though this old road is still being picked up by the unit even though the house and the A1(M) have been there for over 20 years.
On a second occasion while driving down the A1(M) from Durham to Doncaster, the unit advised me at one point to turn left, again i didnt do this as it was an entrance to a farmers field????
I emailed Navman support and they said the following:
The directions provided by the navigation system are only suggestions. The driver is responsible for safe operation of the vehicle and thus should check whether it is safe to follow the instructions. The navigation system is no substitute for the observance of traffic laws if there is a contradiction between the momentary traffic conditions and the information provided by the system. If you decide not to follow the suggested route then the navigation system will automatically calculate a new route and provide new directional information (Automatic New Route Calculation function).

I thought the purpose of Sat Nav was to give correct and updated information that works out the right way to get from A to B?
I also think that the maps supplied are out of date anyway, I believe it is V3, and it shows a date of 2003/04. Does anyone have any information about how i can get updated maps without paying the extortionate prices that Navman are asking for, ie £99.
I paid enough for my unit without having to fork out hundreds of pounds each time it is out of date.
A disgrunttled driver.

Sorry to hear you are having problems with your Navman - I borrowed the 650 to drive to Brittany last year and it was almost perfect over the whole trip. I think that any device from any manufacturer gets it wrong every now and again for lots of different reasons - the map data being just one of them. Localised problems can be caused by poor satellite reception or overhanging trees etc. I have also found that I will be told to "keep left" when the road is straight and a road goes off to the right as in a "Y" junction. It is as though the "knowledge" of the layout of the junction is wrong even though the road is in the right place. Not a big problem.

If you want to update the maps I would personally buy them from Navman - there are too many stories of people being ripped off on ebay. The obvious comparison is to the software on a computer - it eventually needs updating and there is a cost involved if you want the latest OS. I do agree though that there should be a period of "free" updates if you buy a new device and then new map software is released - maybe your device has older maps and was reduced in price to reflect this?

I hope this is helpful.

Hi Andy........

My 610 was purchased November 2005 @ £169.99 and I love it!
The problems you may have is all down to the mapping data?
These systems are only as good as the data supplied.
I have two roundabouts here in Elgin,Scotland, where the 610 advises me to take the 3rd exit (which is normally turn right on a 4 road roundabout?) but I need to go straight ahead, which in fact is the 2nd exit(still with me) but on closer inspection and local knowledge, what appears to be a footpath/lane in front of some houses, was infact the old road, now adjacent to the main road, so in effect I have two left turns before the road straight ahead. But a quick glance of the 610`s display, clearly shows the actual track to follow....straight ahead, so now everytime I approach a roundabout in places I`m not used too, a quick look at the screen, shows the actual exit route to take. If it does send you off track, its very quick to compute a new course. The other roundabout is similar, as one exit, clearly blocked , was the original entrance/exit to the Dr Grays hospital.
The mapping I believe is created by Telemapping who also use data from Ordnance survey? My road here is 8 Years old, and does not display fully on the satnav. but it tells me to quickly join the main road??
Hope this helps a little.

Take care, keep your eyes on the road, not the navigator?
