Topo Trail Software

I'm looking to buy a handheld with topo map software mostly for hiking mountain trails in Colorado. I'm leaning toward an Explorist 400 or 500 with Magellan's topo software. However it appears trails do not show up on the GPS screen using that set up. This seems absurd to me. After all I want to know if I'm on the trail. Am I right in my assessment? If so, is there another topo program out there that I can use on a GPS that does show trails?
