How to create routes

I have a Nuvi 300 and would like to be able to set my own routes for the unit to follow. I have treid EasyGPS but the Nuvi doesn't seem to have any obvious way of reading/using these predefined route files.
So my question is - Is the Nuvi capable of following predefined user created routes, and what is the best way of creating these, and how does the Nuvi use, follow or activate them?
