Hard Wireing I3, help please

Hi All

Bought my i3 last week, and have spent all week reading through everything on the forum, most helpful.

I want to hard wire my i3 into the car, I have worked out from the forum that I can use a motorola V3 in car lead, however I want to wire it straight into the fuse box.

Can I just cut the cigarrete lighter plug off and wire it in? If so which leads in the cable will I need to use (as I assume there will be more than 2).

Or does the cigarette lighter plug contain the bits that convert from 12V down to 3V? If so how can I wire directly.

Hope I've made mayself clear, and many thanks for any help

Do not under any circumstances do what you are describing, you will fry your i3. It runs of USB which is 5 V, 12 V is obviously far too much.

What you can do is get an ancillary in-line cigar lighter socket and wire that in using a fuse and then plug the adaptor into that. Hide all this behind the dashboard somewhere.

the in car charger that came with the i3 has a little cylinder on it - this is the bit that converts it from 12v to 5v - if you DO decide to use the original lead (i'd not recomend it in case you ever sold it) then ake sure you don't cut the cylinder part off like someone did a while back...

Got this off e-bay (so as not to ruin my original lead).

Plan is to dismantel the plug and wire it directly into the fuse box, still leaving the power supply in place somewhere behind the dashboard. Should be fun!

I just hate having things sticking out of my lighter socket, it's behind a panel, which means it has to be open whilst driving, so it rattles and it annoys me (I know i'm fussy) as well as the wires dangling about, just like thinks neat and tidy!

is the voltage regulator definately housed in the plug ? I find the unit gets hot , not the plug .

all mobile phone plugs have the voltage convertor in the 'plug' bit ...i can confirm that the cylinder shape is ferrite choke cos i took a mobile phone one apart to see...
