From a trawl I have gleened some basic knowledge (at 'idiot' level!) on these protocols. But from what I can gather (mainly from Lutz's posts), there is no real gain in getting the receiver to output SIRF protocol. The 'quality' of the signal is no different. It doesn't have shorter intervals between transmissions. Is this correct?

Destinator PN will let you receive SIRF as a protocol and I might give it a whirl in practice this week but I'd be interested in an educated opinion.

I think SiRF binary outputs some extra information which is not available in the NMEA data stream but all the information needed for navigation is included in the NMEA feed.

So unless you have some really specialist application (like SiRF demo) which wants to download odd stuff like empherimis data for the sats then you don't want or need to use SiRF binary protocol.
