I have several devices that can all charge via a USB cable. I want to have all of these plugged in at once in the car, but dont want to have lots of car chargers with their associated bulk and bits of wire trailing everywhere.
I'd like to use something like a USB hub, so that they can all take power from one charger.... will this work, or am I likely to fry one of more of the devices? Also, if the "data" connections on these devices are all wired together on the hub, is there anything strange likely to happen?
I'm assuming that as these should all work happily and charge happily if plugged into a computer via a hub, then it should make no difference if I plug them into a 12v - 5v power adaptor via a hub.
The devices in question are an Orange SPV C600 smartphone, Holux 236 GPS, and iPod - at the moment. More to come, I'm sure

a standard USB port is supposed to deliver 500 mA . Your devices may not need all that, so you could use a small 4 port hub and try powering all ports through the one host cable.
If that fails, you should be fine with a hub that has its own power supply (instead of powering through the host port). Probably the safer solution anyhow. _________________ Lutz

I also have the same assumption.
The problem you have to look out for is the power output of the USB charger.
Most USB chargers output 850mA or less (many do not output what it says!). It should be OK for the GPS and SPV together, but it will strugggle and probably stop working all together if all 3 are connected together.
If you have a 2A car charger, it might be OK.
But then the USB cable of the hub is unlikely to allow such current (the standard USB wire is too thin). That is probably the single major problem for your set up.
What you have to consider is: do all devices draw current under 500mA (could be a little more) in total? If that is the case using the USB hub should be OK.
Otherwise it is safer to plug them in separate car charger, or using something else other than USB hub. _________________ Pc-Mobile
