Well spotted, I've corrected the error in the prices!

As for the TTS (Text To speech), that's correct, for now at least it's available on the 910 only Sad

That seems mad. I can't see any reason why they couldn't put text-to-speech on the 510. It would be very useful for road names and you can fit quite a lot of audio books on an SD card. It would cost them nothing to add this feature. I was half expecting them to add it to the new firmware of the One and Go classic as well.

Very disappointing.

It's simple, they have to give people some reason to buy the more expensive products.

It's common practice in the electronics industry to produce only one type of the product and then deliberately remove features in software from the lower models.

I hope PDA/Mobiles get TTS too given it's only on the 910 I doubt it will happen Sad. TomTom seem concentrated on the GO at the moment and the rest is a side issue.

If you look at TomTom's published accounts on their website the sales of TomTom Go units outstrip all other product groups.

This would explain why the business is heading in this direction. I do wonder if this is the way the whole sat nav industry is heading due to the number of all in one units on the market these days.

Are we looking at the future end of the PDA/Mobile phone market?

It seems odd because when I'm driving around and notice sat-nav in other people's cars, more often than not it's a PDA rather than a GO. Perhaps they are suffering a lot from software piracy and people know that it's cheaper to buy a PDA and get a pirate copy of TT5 than it is to buy a GO?

Am I right in thinking all the maps will be loaded onto your PC? I'm just thinking if you buy a 910 that is a lot of data!!!

Looking at the compatibility chart, all other products, which presumably includes: the existing GOs, Pocket PCs and Mobiles, will have the following content/services:

Safety Cameras
Weather
Voices
Maps
Points of Interest

But they won't have:
Audiobooks
Buddies
Quick GPS Fix
Mobile Safety Cameras
5-day weather forecast

So the only extra content that existing users will have are the Safety Cameras included.

They really seem to be pushing us to buy the new Go range. Especially if you want any of the new functions. :x

Although I still see a fair few PDAs, the number of TomTom GOs, ONEs, and Navman units I see nowadays seems to be increasing.

I've read today's article on the tomtom website and from what I've read there's not that much of a difference between the 510 and the 710.

You might as well either get the 510 or the 910...

Darren,

Could you give us existing TT users some useful information?

How many POI categories does V6 support?

How many POI warning sounds are available in V6?

Will it allow the user to zoom out without it then zooming back in again after a few seconds?

I sincerely hope that POIs and warning sounds are significantly increased over existing levels, although I suspect not - TomTom have a track record of bringing out "upgraded" software which either gives you no improvement or removes some functionality.

The new "features" appear worthless to me (although SirfstarIII and a faster processor would be very useful). I just don't get the widescreen idea, generally when I am driving I look ahead, not to the side. What is it for?

Well, I've read a lot about these new Go's, and on the whole - WOW! Laughing - I think they sound great and I'm now saving my 'pennies' for a 910.
However - I cannot see anything anywhere about "route optimisation" for itineraries. Is this a possible GLARING error Crying or Very sad or have I just missed it?

It would be interesting to find out if TomTom have decent mapping of Ireland on these new units. Laughing

This was most likely done to ensure that only the unit with the high-end hard drive and processor could use it, dropping down the amount of issues with:

- slow/incompatible SD-cards
- slow/incompatible PDAs/phones/older GO units

Think about it. I seriously doubt that my poor 3715 with Navigator 5 or Tungsten T3 and any type of SD-card on the market could pull off the processing power and data throughput (to and from the SD-card) necessary to run TTS as it works on a 910. The 910 has a dedicated hard drive solely for the purpose of storing and parsing the huge datasets contained in the TTS function.

Let's not even get into adding MP3's and audiobooks into the mix. My trusty 512 SD-card would probably eject itself in disgust if I tried to do that much to it. :-)
