Hi Branty
I’m sorry mate, you can be sure that its not Tom-tom’s fault that you are having difficulty getting a Satellite fix. Its your GPS receiver that’s the problem. The modern GPS receivers get a fix in seconds and don’t loose the signal either. If you were to use my BT338 you would be amazed at its performance. If I were you I would start dropping subtle hints that you know what you would like for Christmas or your birthday, which ever is the nearer.

Hi Branty
Sorry, but I misread your problem when I first replied to your cry for help. Ignore what I said. I can now see that you appear to have never got a Satellite fix, ever. Someone who also owns a Mio 168 is bound to see your present predicament and will let you know if the settings that you are using are correct or not. Keep your eye on the forum and help will arrive.

I see you have the recommended settings. Originally I had the same problem as you.

As you are getting 'No valid GPS signal', I assume you are getting the spinning circle, top right off screen.

Try Configuring to TomTom Cable GPS, go outside, under an unobstructed sky, and wait. Could take 20 - 30 minutes or so to get first lock. (The grey bars will appear before that).

If it doesn't pick up the satellites in that time, plug in your external aerial. Once locked you should be able to remove it.

If you have a coated windscreen, stand outside your car to get a lock before setting up inside.

do you need to select "other gps reciever" in tomtom settings

you dont mention what gps reciever you are using, tom tom settings will need to be changed if you are not using tomtoms bt reciever

hope this helps

Have you used any other GPS software that has changed the GPS protocol from NMEA to SIRF? If you have you need to change the protocol back to NMEA 4800 for TomTom to be able to run on a Mio 168. There are a few programs about that will let you switch from one protocol to another.
Try winfast navigator which is available in the downloads section to check your settings. There is a tutorial on this site as well at www.pocketgpsworld.com/winfastnavigatorppc.php

In the GPS hardware settings You MUST use TomTom Cable GPS

I have A Mio 168 and had the same problem.

All should be okay

It's not a must, the recommendation by Mio is Other NMEA GPS 4800 baud on SP2. But I found using TomTom Cable GPS managed to get 6 or 7 sats instead of 4 or 5 with Other NMEA etc. and it holds the lock better.

It should, evidently, make no differnce between the two settings but for some reason the TomTom Cable works better for both my and my sons 168. Strange....

I've got the same problem. It did work for about 5 minutes on the default setting (SP2, 4800 etc etc) but now it won't work at all. I just get no GPS device !??! Sad

hullmackem, is the little blue/yellow wheel rotating? (Top right). If it isn't you may have selected other than SP2 by mistake.

Try setting to TomTom Cable GPS. Exit TomTom, switch off. Do a soft re-set, and try again.

TTN5 is a bit power hungry, evidently, so make sure there are no other programmes running in the background.

Also make sure Settings/Connections/Beam is unticked. (Ref Mio site).

Lastly, have you tried it with your external aerial?

I have a Palm T3 with TT5 wired and had intermitent problems with the GPS signal. I found cleaning the contacts with fine sandpaper on the Palm and the car bracket solved the problem.
