Hi all, first i want to say what a great and informative site, brilliant.

Ok, where to start...... i've been looking to buy a sat nav unit for a while now, but not knowing which one to go for. Considered the Tom Tom's, Garmins, Sony's etc.etc......

Then last Friday we had a flyer chucked throught the door from Staples (the stationers), offering the Magellan RM300 at £199.99....!

Did a bit of research, and came to the conclusion that it was probably a very reliable unit, working on the principle that if the name is good enough for the marine and aircraft industries, it's good enough to stick in my car. So i decided to save a bit of money (over that of a Tom Tom or a Sony), and went and bought it on the promise that if after 14 days i decide that i dont like it, or would prefer the Garmin C310 instead at the same price, all i need do is take it back.... no questions asked.

Ok, so i've got it home and had a bit of a play with it, and i must admit i'm impressed with the speed it seems to locate not only itself but also addresses that i type in. Having said all that, i've visited the Magellan website, and it says there is a 'firmware' update (whatever that is).... question:- do i need to do this? and is it worth it? and what will it do for me?

Only downside i can find so far is that there is no battery back-up.... but do i really need it, probably not. It comes with a mains adaptor, so i can sit and 'pre-load' all my favourite addresses and so forth from the comfort of my armchair (next to the window ). Plus there is no option to search by post code. So. The few seconds it takes to actually type in an address, or even retrieve a previously saved one, doesn't really bother me.

The only other minus i can find at the moment is the POI data base. I've tried to search out some of my local well know resturants and they're not on it. Is it possible to up-date the POI database at all...?

Anyway, i've owned it for a few days now, and am impressed with the accuracy of it.... as i pull up to the drive it says "You have arrived..."

Bearing in mind that i do have the option of the 14 day money back (or exchange) guarantee..... do you reckon i'v made a good choice with the RM300 or should have gone for the Garmin C310 or the Navman ICN510(?) both at the same price as the Magellan....

Any thoughts or recommendations are welcomed.

Nick.
