Dont leave it on view, its very common to have the car broken into in case there is a unit in the car, glove box or similar.

Going back top the case issue....

I don't know about what TomTom would think of putting a case in the box, but retailers would hate it.

The profit margins on GPS products are miniscule (often as low as, if not lower than 10%). Compare this to your typical highstreet retailers 30%, 40%, 50% average profit margin. When you then factor in the costs of logistics, marketing, staffing & commission, that leaves very little for the reatiler in the end on the sale of a GPS unit.

The case for them gives them an easy "add-on" sale. If not, it gives them an easy promotion opportunity (ie. Buy the unit from us instead to that place around the corner, get we'll give you a free case).
I think the decision is propbably less to do with TomTom and more to do with pressure from retailers looking to boost a low margin through the sale of add-ons. It's very similar to the situation when the GO300 was released without a mains charger.

It got to the point last year when places were offering free ipods and mobile phones with TT units, because those extra products gave them more add-on opportunities than the GPS unit did on it's own.
