hi there
i have just taken the big step from 1.3 to 3.5.
with the old software you could just have the map on the screen and the gps would move the cross over the map, as you sped around the countryside, without going to navigation mode.
In the new sofware version, i haven't quite worked out how i can get that to work.
Thanks for any pointers

One of the "enhancements" for v3 is that you have to be going somewhere to use it so you can't simply leave it in Navigation mode with POI warning switched on and use it as a safety camera warning system.
This is one of the features of v3 that makes me thinks that a return v2.5 makes sense |

When I found that a major new release was available I expected (I think quite reasonably) that the problems I’d found in 2.5 would be resolved and so I rushed to install the new version 3.
What a mistake ! Clunky menus, loss of functionality, no improvements. After a very short time I decided it had to go and I reverted to version 2.5 using my original installation discs plus the 2.5.2 patch downloaded from ViaMichelin. An easy and quick procedure.
Now I’m back to living with the short-comings of 2.5, but they’re a lot more liveable-with than the problems of version 3 ! |

It was a complete un-install and re-install of the software.
On my PDA I have the maps on an SD card, so I removed that first and put it aside, then uninstalled the software on both PC and PDA.
On my PC I was effectively starting again just like a completely new user, so I used my original 2.5 installation discs then followed up with the 2.5.2 patch (the 2.5.1 patch has diappeared from the ViaMichelin site, so I'm assuming that it's included in 2.5.2).
Part of this procedure is to also put the software onto the connected PDA, which it did without problems.
Then I replaced the SD card and it all worked.
The only additional thing I had to do was to remove the version 3 icon from my PDA's programme menu. |

So to get back "on-topic" again (after a long delay).

By accident, I discovered that you can do that again in VM v4.
Fire up the software.
Click "Plan Your Journey"
Click "Display a Map"
Click "Map Options"
Click "Centre"
Click "on GPS position"
And then, once again, you can travel around with the map following your position. However, any POI Alerts you may have do not sound as you are not actually navigating anywhere. Not a great problem except for those of you who may be speed merchants and need alerts for "safety" cameras. _________________ - - - - - - - - -

Now that's interesting. I wonder if I could do that in v3.5. Will try and feedback here.
I am waiting for the bugs to be ironed out before upgrading.
Fingers crossed! |

I tried it v3.2 (v3.5 refers to Mapstore release Mapsonic only ever got to v3.2 or v3.3 for those requiring the Tungsten only patch) and unfortunately the GPS icon simply disappears of the edge of the map as you drive rather than keeping it in the centre of the screen and the map moving |

Well, that certainly seems to have been put right in v4. _________________ - - - - - - - - -
