They are a set of satellites which provide correction information to your GPS unit to help improve the accuracy. The European system (EGNOS) is still in testing and there is debate about if it is providing useful information at the moment.


i was always under the impression that egnos signals were from base stations and i was about to correct you to my way of thinking. however, a quick google confirms i was wrong and they're actually geostationary satellites.

well done skippy, you rule :D

however, further digging informs me i was partially correct as there are ground-based stations involved for some of it! take a look at http://www.esa.int/esaNA/GGGQI950NDC_index_0.html for lots of techy speak!
