No it shouldnt be registered by halfords you need to go on line and register it or better stil give garmin UK a ring to register it and .
then they should be able to tell you what upgrades you are entitled to
Enjoy the Quest you will soon learn all the pro's and cons of gps ownership

Hi mate,
Go to the web-site or give em a ring as advised. You're entitled to a free upgrade to v7 as I did. The discs arrive in a couple of days.
The likelyhood is, is that Garmin will upgrade you to v8 which is due out right now. Again, this will be a free upgrade. |

I got a Quest with v6 and Garmin sent me a free upgrade to v7. You register via their website or email them.
Garmin say that v8 maps are due out at the end of Feb. Some people suggest that you should wait till then to register the unit and get the latest v8 maps. That's what I would do if I were you. _________________ Gone fishing! |

Quoted from Garmin Map Updates www.garmin.com/unlock/update.jsp
Quote: | If you purchased a locked MapSource product ON or AFTER the release date of an update, you are entitled to an unlock on the newer version of that product for free. Please see details. |
City Select Europe V7 was released 30 NOV 2004 so you are allowed a free upgrade since you bought yours after that date. V8 will be released after your purchase date of December 2005, hence no free update.

Yeah, but how do they know when you purchased it? I think they just base the upgrade on the date you REGISTER it so if you hold off registering then you get a free upgrade to v8 rather than v7.
I don't think there is any harm in waiting a few weeks until v8 is released before registering in the hope that Garmin will give you the latest maps. However, this was discussed a little while ago and someone said it would be illegal and dishonest to do this (blah blah blah). _________________ Gone fishing! |

Make sure you tick the "Avoid unpaved roads" option. There may also be an option to set the routing for "Truck" which will avoid certain road types where possible.
Also, make sure you always use "Quickest" routing not "Shortest" because shortest will take you down more minor roads.
Be prepared for it to send you some places you can't or don't want to go, the routing is good but certainly NOT PERFECT. If it tells you to do something you don't like then ignore it and let it recalculate an alternative route.
Good luck! _________________ Gone fishing! |

The quest works straight out of the box I think ,registering is not the same as unlocking . Registering lets garmin know what you've got and helps with warranty info
I didnt think that garmin use unlocking at all (I have been known to be wrong) as for age that doesnt matter just interest in tech stuff helps . I had a shock when someone mentioned I might be eligible for heating allowance this year.
Enjoy the quest it looks a good bit of kit

You probably got an 8 character coupon code with the Quest (DON'T lose it!) and you input that on the Garmin website or Mapsource wizard to get a 25 digit code which is linked to your Quest by serial number. This allows Mapsource to upload maps to your Quest.
What you probably have is the UK maps preloaded and if you don't want to load other map areas then you don't have use your coupon code to get the 25 digit unlock code yet.
If you ever go to Europe then you will have to use Mapsource to select the maps areas you want to upload and load them in. For this, you need the 25 digit unlock code so you would have to register the unit with Garmin.
Hold off using your coupon code until the v8 maps are out, probably in a few weeks.
Hope that makes sense! _________________ Gone fishing! |
