I was thinking about purchasing the some of the swisstopo maps. Probably the Swiss Map 50 and then the 25 as each region becomes available.

http://www.swisstopo.ch/en/products/digital/multimedia/sm50/

http://www.swisstopo.ch/en/products/digital/multimedia/sm25/

According to Swisstopo they are compatible with a range of Garmin GPS devices including mine.

What can I expect. Will I be able to load the maps to my unit or is it more a case of me being able to plan a route and waypoints on my computer and then send it to my gps.

Does any one have any experience of these maps and compatible Garmin devices.

Thanks.

Hi greg_ch

Don't expect too much, no map transfer will be possible with that product. If you check the site carefully, you'll find the relevant information:

Quote:
GPS
Position display
Transfer of waypoints
Routes and tracks

The maps made by Swiss Topo are bitmap based maps. They look exactly like the ones you've got on paper. The Garmin units need vector maps.

If you like to have the maps downloadable onto a Garmin device, take a look at the Swiss Topo especially made for Garmin devices:
http://www.garmin.ch/d_carto_models.php3 (Klick on Topo Schweiz on the left).

To take a look at how these maps will look like, use the following link:

PS: By saying the Garmin Unit take vector maps I refer to the real Garmin Units and NOT the PocketPC models, which IMHO are not real Garmin's... 8)

Thanks for your reply Beat.

I took a look at the the Garmin Topo products and the online mapping and it looks like it will work for me :D

I will mail them to see if they are planning a 1:25 for Zentralschweiz
