The simple answer is if you buy it in the UK chances are it will have UK or Europe mapping on it, they are available in the US, if i were you d give her the cash to buy one over there with the state maps she requires or you could buy one here and then she would have to purchase additional maps in the US and ive heard of compatability probs with S SD formats and UK ones

The Mio 168/168RS comes with their own branding of Destinator which I beleive is Navteq based in the US (at least that's what the comparison chart on this site shows). I think the maps & software that comes with it is quite old.

I've been told that Navteq's data is better in the US then Telatlas.

An alternative is to buy the navman pin 100 which is the same hardware but different (teleatlas based) software. Newegg.com has it for under <300USD, if you find you don't like the maps/software oncourse/navigon has a compedative upgrade for their Navteq maps/software for $80USD on their website. Copilot has a similar program on their site.

i see, my mistake.

i've heard that navteq is better from some and that tele atlas is better than others. all i really have to go with is personal expereince. I've tried the tomtom gos and the garmin 320, and of those two, i preferred the tele atlas on the go.

let me know how things work out.
