GB Topo Map and OS coordinates

Hi all,

I;ve got the GB topo map V2 on my Vista Cx. I was just wondering when setting waypoints on either PC or gps can I use GPS coordinates rather than longtitude or latitude as I tend to take routes from a guidebook and so really want to plug these straight into setting a route on the gps.

GPS co-ords are Lat/ Long what you will need to look at is whether the device supports the different methods of displaying the same data.

D.D Decimal Degrees
D.M.S Degrees Minutes, Seconds
OSGB typical 12 figure grid refs

There are plenty more to go at the above are just a selection, what are you wanting to type in, post an example then someone with the same device will be able to tell you how to do it (if its possible) - Mike

HI,

I have the Garmin Etrex Vista Cx. I wanted to put in coordinates like:

GR435128

i.e Ordnance Survey Landranger Grid Reference which is what i'm used to using from OS maps.

A very good way to do waypoints/routes simply (but not cheaply) is to use something like MemoryMap or Anquet on your PC. These apps use OSGB maps (1:50k or 1:25k) and allow you to set waypoints and create routes on your PC. You can then transfer these to your GPS from the application and finally, print off a customised OSGB map with your waypoints/routes on it for walking etc. No more fiddling with large paper maps on a wet and windy moor :D Also, if you record tracks of your walk etc on the GPS you can download these onto the PC mapping just to check where you went and see the profile.

You can archive the routes/waypoints and tracks to you PC to keep records of your adventures.

I use both and each have their plus and minus points. You could download trials of them and see how you get on.

You can get 1:50k coverage of the whole UK (or large chunks) for relatively sensible prices (compared to buying paper maps) but 1:25k mapping is (in my opinion) a bit pricey - reserve these for areas you intend to explore often.

Hi Phil,

Thanks for those suggestions, funnily enough I read that information in a walking mag whilst on holiday and plan to do exactly that.

I have memory map and will set up routes with this and then upload using mapsource. Another useful thing I've found is some plasticy paper that you can print on so the A4 map you have doesn't tear. Can't remember exactly what its called though.

I use Tough Print for the wet weather maps I want to print (most of the time plain A4 will do so long as you have a decent map pouch) - more details on the paper can be found Here - not cheap, but it is very good, and don't forget you can print on both sides - Mike
