Fugawi UK conduit crashes Palm Hotsync

Can anyone who has got Fugawi working on their Palm lend me a hand by telling me their set-up?

I got Fugawi UK v2 at Christmas and am trying to get it to work with my Palm Tungsten T3. So far, the FugPalm application installs on the PDA, and talks OK to my GlobalSat BT-338. The PC application also appears to work OK, and talks to the GPS. When I select an area to export to the PDA, it shows up in the PDA Library window. However, whenever I try to Hotsync, the Palm Hotsync Manager crashes and exits at the point where it gets to "Synchronising Fugawi Palm Conduit". No maps get sent to the PDA.

Sorry I don't use a Palm or Win98 on my "normal" PC, but to answer your final question, yes it should be possible to put the maps onto an SD card without using Active Sync/Hotsync (I always do for my PPC).

The basic method is given in the "Help : Contents : Quickstart for Palm" section of the PC program. I don't think I had to set up the path, but my .FX4 maps are written to c:\Program Files\Common Files\Fugawi\PocketPC Export. They can be copied from there to a card reader and are put in the \Fugawi folder for a PPC. Start with a fairly small section of map because the map processing is quite slow and the Fugawi UI rather uninformative.

If you have difficulties defining "useful" map regions, I posted the full method that I use some months ago. Post again if you need more information. Good luck with the Palm.

Thanks for the speedy reply. Unfortunately, I've tried this, with no success.

When I run Fugawi on the Palm, if there is an SD card in, it creates the folder \PALM\Fugawi, with a subfolder called Maps. If I run Fugawi either with no SD card, or with the Maps folder empty, the Maps/Map menu in the Palm application has no effect. I just get a blank screen with the Fugawi title, the GPS time and icons telling me I have a connection.

If I copy files into the \PALM\Fugawi\Maps folder, the Maps menu lists them, under the title "Maps Info", and gives me four options. I can Load a file (pops up a wait message if it is a large file, otherwise no effect), Delete (deletes the file), Move (prompts to "move to main", but has no other effect), or Cancel. None of the options either causes the map to show, or copies any visible data to the Palm's internal memory.

I have 25 MB free space on the Palm's internal memory, and am trying to use maps smaller than 1 MB, so size shouldn't be a problem.

The files are listed with their name and extension, then "(Ext.Mem.)". I have tried using the .FPB files that get created in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Fugawi\Palm for each map that I try to export to the Palm. There is also a Maps.PML file in the same place that I've tried too. I've even tried using the .FX4 files generated for export to a PPC. No luck with any of them.

I've seen posts elsewhere about using SD cards directly, but everyone who has got this working seems to have been a PPC user. I've also seen a number of posts asking if there is any way of HotSyncing directly to an SD card. It seems that normally you have to Hotsync to internal memory, then move the file to the SD card using Fugawi. The Fugawi Palm conduit must do something slightly more intelligent than a straight file transfer.

With any luck I'll hear something useful from Fugawi's customer support. So far they've only asked investigatory questions...

I came across my previous posts, and thought I'd better update the story.

Since then I've upgraded my PC from an AMD K6-2 to an Intel Centrino Duo, from Win98 to XP SP2, and to the latest updates of Fugawi UK Maps and Palm Desktop, but the Fugawi conduit still crashes the Hotsync manager, unless I edit the registry to disable it.

In the end I did find a workaround for the problem, although it wasn't particularly satisfactory. I had to hotsync the maps to a very old Palm m105 that I dug out of the chucking-out pile, and then use Filez to beam them over IrDA to the Tungsten T3. The m105 isn't much use for navigation itself, with the low-res B&W screen and no way of hooking it to a GPS. However, it does work with the Fugawi conduit, using exactly the same configuration that crashes with the T3.

I guess there must be some kind of Tungsten specific bug in the Fugawi conduit, but it doesn't look like there's a fix (although I'd love it if someone can correct me on this!) Shame, since it rather limits the usefulness of some otherwise decent software.
