Rolling Eyes hi
My tom 5 has developed a strange anoying habit of sending me back to the place where I left the route it prescribed and will not recalculate using a new route to my destination-
The other day I drove around a city I know well for about half an hour before I realised I had been routed back at the point where I had left the route to take a short cut--
In the end I told the woman telling me " to turn aound when possible " to do that with herself and turned the satnav off!!!!!!!!!!!!
I seem to recall the T 3 did not do that and plotted my course home --recalculating as I drove along--
The copilot live 6 and viamichelin certainly do this OK as I have checked with friends-
I left a few messages on th TT website but only received odd emails --unrelated to my problem
In desperation I phoned them up--unfortunately they could not understand my problem!!!!
Can any one please help and tell me what I am doing wrong--if anything???
kind regards and seasonal greetings to all--
thanks for all the useful tips I have picked up from the posts
regards
alexis
mio 186 and t5

Try using Calculate Alternative once you 'go off-route'. It sometimes works.

have tried that when stationary-
rather difficult to do when driving a MX5 roadster--
did not help still kept telling me to turn around when possible and takes me back to the point I went off route-
A pal of mine has had this problem a few times with T 5 --says its the software and you have to put up with it--

is the answer to buy copilot???

any advise welcome

cheers

You have the option to disregard the sat nav at all times when local knowledge is better than that offered, but you need to remember that the device will always try to get you to your planned destination, if you have been to it, and not selected home as a new destination the device knows no difference and will continue to take you back to the same place - Mike

hi
thanks for reply--
I have always set the destination--so I do not think it can be due to that-
I have just come across the terms

1-DYNAMIC RECALCULATION/REROUTING--

and I think this is what I am trying to explain-- is missing in my TT5--

I have cleared all the memory in the MIO twice (full cold reset-there is only TT5 running)) and re-installed TT5 from the official discs bought from TT--

unfortunately the problem persists--
frankly I am loosing confidence in the software --

has anyone else had this problem and how have they sorted it??

again many thanks
alex

I think that's exactly the problem. You still have the old destination set, and therefore get those irritating instructions. In the TomTom menu structure there is an item called "Clear route" - I suggest you try that one.

hi
No--I do not think this is the cause of problem--I always clear old itinery /destination /route before inputting new one and check the route using " browse map"
I have also tried soft reset on the MIO before starting TT 5--made no difference.

I also use the extension antena and have used TT 5 with the hood down so screen etc cannot be the reason for the voice telling me to retrace my route to the where I left it instead of recalculating and giving me new route instruction to my destination-

many thanks
alex

This may be a far shot but is your storage card locked? (Set to read-only)?

Just a thought, but this is the way TTN behaves when you are using Itineries and you have failed to 'pass through' a waypoint that you have subsequently decided to bypass.

When that happens, you need to mark the relavant waypoint as VISITED, TT will then ignore it and route you to the next. Otherwise it will continualy try to route you back to that point!

Regards

Hello John

Many thanks --
I think you are on to something here!!!!!!!!!!

I never remove my itineries --but would this cause a problem when I have set TTN to take me from my workplace to my home by tapping "navigate to..." and then tapping "home"--
(I do have an itinery set up for this purpose but as far as I am aware I never load it)
I think I will do a full reinstall again having cleared ram with a hardware restore using the on/off switch on the MIO and reformatting the sd--and see if the problem is resolved.

Again thanks to you all for reading my posts and taking the trouble to give advice.
A Happy New Year
cheers
alex
PS may be back if problem persists!!!!

From experience, Navigator does what you say due to a couple of other events:

- No GPS-signal/lock, which sometimes forces the software to head back to the last known point

- A deliberate deviation from the given route; Navigator will simply recalculate a new route the moment it can create a new route depending on your current location. If it can't do that (calculate a new route) it will simply tell you to turn around.

This can take a while to recalculate, since if you're on a highway, the nearest possible location from where a new route can be calculated from could be miles from where you are; in a city, it never takes very long to recalculate (due to the enormous amount of possible routings).

If you have it set to Fastest route and TomTom thinks that going back to where you left it's planned route will still be quicker then it will try and send you back the way you've come. If you carry on following your own route there will come a point where the alternative route is quicker and TomTom will revert to navigating that way.

Why should the TT5 programme assume the traffic/weather conditions and my knowledge of the area in this settting??--In a city it would take longer to find a safe place to turn around and find my way back to the original route--
I find the reasoning behind this algorithm difficult to understand-
Perhaps TT5 is trying to be too clever or too stupid.

All the TT program is doing is calculating how long it takes to travel each stretch of road. This information is encrypted into the Map Data by TeleAtlas and the program adds them together to work out the quickest.

It's not perfect, it's not very convenient sometimes, but it will get you there, ultimately. You have the choice to disregard the instructions if you know a better route. Smile
