Complete noob questions (TTN5BT + Hx4700)

Hey all,

I'll be buying tom tom navigator 5 tomorrow including the BT GPS receiver they provide.. is this a good receiver?

I'll be running it on an HP Hx4700. Is this a good PDA to run it on?

I also have a 1gb SD card on it if that makes a difference..

Any advice for a newbie is highly welcome.. any critiques on the setup as well.
Looking forward to TomTom London ehe.

The BT Mk 2 receiver is certainly the best of the three I have (the others are a Navman and a Garmin) for using with TTN5.

I can't answer your 4700 query, but the 4" screen should be good. Audio output is noticably poorer on the newer iPAQs, though, as they reduced the speaker size to cram in more features.

I currently have an older iPAQ5555 with a 32x Lexar 1GB SD card in it, which works just fine.

Can the bluetooth receiver also be used with my laptop? Say if I wanna go use it when I go sailing with my sailing software?

Also do you know if the standard package comes with the stuff to hook the PDA and stuff to the car? Click here.

that's the one I'm thinking of getting...

The 4700 is great fantastic screen quality (I used to use it for nav before changing to the PDA Phone units, now its sole use is for the multi-meter/ development work), as Tim states there is an issue with the speaker so get an ampified mount, otherwise the speaker will probably break (a mate of mine has gone through two in under a year), if it doesn't break it is difficult to hear in a car at speed - Mike

I use TT5 (Europe - disks only) with a non TT BT GPS on a hx4700.

On a 1 gig card I can get UK plus, France plus, Spain and probably at least one more map (takes ages to install maps via cradle). Had a bit of trouble getting voices, POIs and other addons to work from the card and not main memory. TomTom support didn't offer any useful advice but creating the appropriate directories on the card solved the problems (thanks to tip from this forum). Stability is good however, I sometimes need to soft reset to wake up Ipaq exiting TT.

Map drawing speed and quality is V good. I noticed a few map errors (one way streets mostly, a few incorrect junctions and street names too) and the voice sometimes gives a double turn when it isn't.

A powered audio cradle is pretty essential, battery goes flat in half hour without power. I got one that keeps the GPS battery charged as well). Ipaq gets quite warm when used for a long journey.

I'm not sure a BT GPS is better than CF. BT signal is too strong if GPS is within a couple of feet of the Ipaq so is has to be separate- another trailing cable to keep it charged. Also easy to forget it when changing vehicles.

I find it a bit too easy to rely on it. I tend not to think about where I am going, just following directions. I doubt I could remember even the way back in a strange area without it, let alone doing the same journey again!

I make a lot of calls to different addresses in my area. I thought I knew my area well but it's surprising how often I am wrong with what I thought to be the quickest route, especially when travelling between addresses and not to or from home. I still keep finding roads I never knew existed.

I had to pick up an A-Z today for the first time in quite a while, (...left the GPS in another vehicle AGAIN :-{... ) I had forgotten how much of a pain it was to have to keep stopping to look at the map (find reading glasses, interior light, etc.. ) trying to work through to an address in the middle of housing estate.

The Europe maps (France & Spain) are pretty good but much less detail than UK. Many smaller roads are not charted and because TT tries to place you on the nearest road it often thinks you on a road sever hundred feet above or below you in mountains. Try sticking the GPS to the window in an aeroplane (the inside, not the outside!) and follow the route on the Ipaq! I did 550 MPH down the M1 the other week! (don't set up a route - it can't keep up with the changes) some airlines don't like you doing this but Ryan Air don't mind between takeoff and landing.
