I recently purchased direct from TomTom their upgrade pack to improve my TT3 software to TT5.

The instructions didn't appear to suggest that I needed to leave my existing TT3 SD card in my PDA and being worried about loosing all my TomTom software I inserted a new SD card.

The copying of TT5 seemed to work OK but it doesn't then give me the option of installing the maps (do I really need to copy across all 6 map CDs?) or then registering the software on TomTom's web site.

My thought is that maybe I need to keep by old TomTom SD card in my PDA but I'm worried about corrupting the data on it and loosing my TomTom system all together!

The instructions that came with the upgrade are not great in my opinion and I emailed TomTom 2 weeks ago and haven't yet got a reply.

Has anyone out there gone through this process? Any words of wisdom?

Thanks

Scubaman

The main reason for the upgrade are the newer maps, so you certainly want to install the new maps from the upgrade CDs to your new SD card. You can get the program itself from the TomTom support site.

TT5 is not an improvement. You will get more up-to-date maps and a dumbed down version of TT3 with a few features that may, or may not, work correctly for you.

You need the TT5 maps for the TT5 software. You will have a full set of maps for Europe on your 6 CD set but you only need to install the maps you require. The map of the UK is around 110mbytes (or larger for the plus version which includes the Major roads of Europe).

When you say that you were not given the option to install the maps did you try one of the map CDs?

If you tried one of the map CDs and still have not got the option to install the maps then you have found one of the TT installation bugs. TT hasn't automatically deleted the application setup from your temp(orary) folder on your hard disk and it erroneously uses the existing setup on your hard disk rather than fetching the map setup from the CD.

The fix is listed in the bug list, found as a 'sticky post' in this forum

1. Remove the CD-rom from your CD-rom drive.
2. Click on Start, select Run and type %temp%, then press OK.
3. Select the file setup.exe and delete this file by tapping delete on your keyboard.

You can now insert the Map CD 1

You can treat the TT5 upgrade as a new piece of software. you don't have to touch TT3.

If you have problems you are more likely to get an answer from other users rather than TT.
