Oh! I didn’t know that! Thanks mgibbs. Also, there is no doubt that my son didn’t know this either. And of course, having seen it go dim, it is human nature to try harder to turn it off, which translates into holding down buttons/switches longer and harder!
I do not know if this was/is the problem; I don’t intentionally hold the button down, but I guess a slightly longer press could unwittingly cause the effect.
I will try this out later, and try to determine the time needed…I’m just scared of turning it on again just in case I’ll be faced with nothing working!

You only have to press it for about a second so its easily done.
I'd also recommend the Sprite backup software.
The iPaq backup software is an old version of Sprite (at least on my 2210 it is). The main advantage of the bought package is that it can backup your iPaq to your PC via your cradle/usb cable so the entire contents of the PDA are backed up off the device (no use having it backed up to storage cards if the entire device gets stolen or dropped in a puddle).
This is the link to the Sprite Software site for the PPC version.

I can endorse all the other comments about Sprite backup. In the options you can schedule regular backups when the pda will switch on, backup to the storage card, and switch off again. You can also set it to backup if battery power drops to a predetermined level, mine is 30%. an absolute lifesaver.
Also if you set it to create self-restoring Backup Files, if you have to perform a hard reset when away from a PC (or if the battery goes flat) you simply select the most recent backup file on the card, and it will restore everything back to the pda just as it was at the last backup time.

Well, the good news is that I have turned everything on again and it is all still working! Also, I have found a backup program on it…although I take the point that it won’t be as good as the latest, bought version; at least it’s something! I presume that, if I copied the backup file onto my PC I could copy it back over to a new SD card if the worse came to the worst. Wouldn’t that be as good as the bought version, albeit requiring file manipulation?
I also played with holding the on/off button down; as of course, you predicted, it did darken the screen i.e. the “power save” feature. And it was only about a second or so to operate. I bet that’s what happened.
Only need to know why it decided to turn itself on in the first place, and of course, why it also ignored the “turn off if not used for 3 minutes”.
