Take your argument to its logical conclusion -

Why do you need POIs at all - after all we always used to find what we were looking for.

then again why do we need sat nav when for many years we have got by fine with paper maps

Then again why do we need maps when we can just stop a passer by and ask.

Sat nav, like most modern inventions, is about convenience rather than strict need - man sorted out those thousnads of years ago.

So some people have sat nav to make it more convenient to find what they want to find. That can include petrol stations and car parks, both of which can sometimes be pretty vital if you are running a car.
