Dear All

I have just received an external antenna for the 570 to use when I take it in a car with a coated front windscreen.

The MMCX plug clicks into the socket OK (and the antenna works well), but what concerns me is that it has quite a lot of play. You can easily wobble it from side to side.

I would expect the plug itself to not have any play, but have never used this type of connector before. The socket is solidly fixed, so it is not this moving, it definately is the plug wobbling in the socket.

Looking at the plug, there is a sprung ring on the connector to hold it in the socket, the play seems to come from the barrel of the plug moving within this ring (that itself has locked into the socket). I am not sure if there is a problem, as this may just be normal for this type of plug, but it seems odd.

Does anyone have an external antenna using a MMCX connector? Can the plug easily be wobbled when in the socket?

Hi Sub,

I'll take a look at mine 2nite, don't remember there being anything wrong with the connector on my antenna- seemed tight enough fit on mine as far as I recall. anyway, i'll post an update once I've taken a look.

Hi sub,

just taken a look at mine. The connector fits in quite snug into the PiN with a click, but then there is some movement on the connector itself once its located. It is not loose as such or wobbles about, just some movement there though.

hadn't noticed this as I only plug it into the unit when I'm in the car and the PiN is in the PDA mount.

So from what you describe if its loose, then there could be a problem, if its more just the movement of the connector when located, its probably like mine then.

Have to confess don't know if this is normal or not for an MMCX connector but looking at it probably is.

Hi Adek

Thanks for checking yours. What you describe sounds like mine. It has a positive click when connecting it, but it then is not held firmly and can move a bit from side to side.

Probably is normal as yours sounds the same, but seems a bad design to allow the plug to move about like that.

Do you always use the external antenna? I found that the built in one does work well. I got the external one in case I wanted to use the 570 in a car with a coated windscreen or in town centres with tall buildings that might block some satellites. One of the main points for me choosing the 570 was the convenience of not having to always have an external antenna like the TT kits.

One other thing, have you found a way of having your current speed showing when not actually being guided to a destination?

Thanks

Sub, the GPS on the PiN worked fine in the open air, but in my car was less ggod, hence why I got the external antenna. So the couple of times I used the PiN when not in my car it worked fine on its own.

On the subject of current speed, don't know I'm afraid. when its routing you to a destination the ETA, speed, time etc can be shown on the screen, but I've not seen this when it's just tracking your position. all it seems to do then is show the arrow moving on the live 2D map.

the only place I have seen the speed, is <land speed> in the gps setup window, but that's not really all that useful as its not very accessible.
