Nokia N70 tomtom mobile 5 problem

Well I've got V5 firmware...and it hasn't made much of a difference Sad

It still says 'No GPS device' now and then, but less frequently and reconnects faster.

Anyone solve this?

Hi everyone.

I'm now four days into testing out Version 5 software with the original TT GPS receiver and so far so good. Only had "NO GPS Device" once and that was due to a flat battery in the receiver. One thing I have noticed that I cannot recall seeing on previous software levels (though not certain) is that each time I start TomTom, I get a message in the top right corner of the screen saying "Welcome to TomTom Mobile"
Can anyone else confirm seeing this on software other than v5.

I will continue to test and post results back here. I am very reluctant to say it's fixed because of past experience. It seems to be the kiss of death to do so!

After two weeks of stress, and considerable reading on this thread, I am pleased, relieved, and delighted to say that I have resolved my problems with the N70 and tomtom. My phone kept losing the GPS device after 20 minutes and then the phone needed rebooting before I could use it again, having upgraded from my Nokia 6680, (which was superb at being a phone and sat nav). I had even bought another 6680, and was going to change back, when a friend told me about a fast memory card, not to be confused, this card reads at 8meg per sec and writes at 15 meg per sec., it still didnt work, I then went to Nokia and they upgraded my firmware to a "Euro update" version 5.7, still had problems, then deleted the BT paring, and re-paired, entered the bt passcode of 0000 but did not allow authorization. After that everything held together and I can make calls while using tomtom, with all the voices and my POI's (camera's), and even recieve messages at the same time. So the route (pardon the pun) forward is N70, Euroversion firmware upgrade 5.07, rapid memory card, and do not authorize the Bluetooth pairing for your GPS device - Good luck and good hunting. P.S. I used the Nokia repair centre in Coventry, ask for Dean.

interesting.. "euro version 5.07"!!.. i might try upgrading from v2 - coventry isnt too far from birmingham. although i must say using the single file camera datase has been ok so far, but i must stress i havent tested it thoroughly yet. im due for a trip to london this easter weekend so i'll test the single file database then, and i might ring this dean person next week sometime.

russelr - could you type in *#0000# and write everything that displays on your phone please? I have:

Also, what GPS do you have? When you pair it, do you mean oustside of TomTom, as in the normal Bluetooth control panel, or within TomTom?

warmasice - is there a specific method you use for connecting your GPS?

You have the same version of frimware that I now have. Things are still ok. Used it twice again today with no problems. Still reluctant to say it's sorted though. Guess I'll be convinced after several weeks fault free. Seen and heard of too many false dawns!

jon29 - Initially my n70 (still on firmware v2) was crashing when i used the normal speed camera database.. the one with multiple ov2 files - evertime it crashed i had to restart the phone.

To resolve this i did the following within Change preferences / Manage POI:
1. Select the 'Enable/Disable POI' option, then deselect all poi's.
2. Select the 'Warn when near POI' option, then deselect all poi's.

The above step only had to be done once of course. Now each time i want to run tomtom i follow the steps below and it works everytime:

1. Ensure my phones bluetooth visibility is 'Shown To All'.
2. Check the Paired Devices section, and delete my gps receiver if its there. (tomtom will have automatically paired your receiver when u previously ran it).
3. Turn my on the gps receiver, and wait until its locked onto a signal (important!).
4. Only then, run tomtom, at this stage it asks me for a passcode and i enter '0000'.

I have used the steps above many times and have not had a problem, other people may find different steps work but it does me fine. I get the occassional No GPS Device message, but thats quite normal - it happens when u have a poor satellite connection, but connect almost instantly (the phone doesnt crash at all). Im from birmingham and I regularly travel to london and leeds. The camera database isnt very important to me, but...

I tried using the single file camera database and so far hasnt crashed my phone, but i havent tested it thoroughly. I have a feeling if i use it for long enough it MAY crash it - but i can only guess! I'm due to travel to london this weekend and will test it then. If all is good i wont bother upgrading to v5 firmware.

Sure the version i have is 5.0609.2.0.1 01-03-06 RM-84 my GPS reciever is an i-blue and it is not paired on the phone at all, so when you go through the connect icon to bluetooth and look at paired items there is nothing present. The memory card is a 512 megabyte Xtreme card which is a much faster card than my old Kingston 512 meg card, which was perfect for my 6680. I do believe that the GPS unit is looking to pair with a valid bluetooth item, while the phone is also trying to do the same, thus causing some connection confusion, so switch the reciever on 1st, then start sat nav, and it will connect, after asking for the code, if I loose the signal its usually in a bad signal area, and on these rare occasions it will start again when the signal improves or you can be impatient and restart sat nav, it will then continue the route as normal. Well thats my simplistic explanation, however all I wanted was my phone to be a phone whilst carrying out the duties of a Sat Nav, I travel approx 45k miles per annum, and sat nav is important and whilst traveling the motorways for many hours a week, you need to be able to speak hands free, and a smart phone is the favoured route. - Good luck :D

warmasice - Thanks for the steps, tried all that, but still get the 'No GPS device' quite frequently. Basically, it's perfect for the first 2 minutes, then after that, it drops out every 20-30 seconds.
When I turn my GPS on for it to lock onto satellites, I load TomTom but it doesn't ask me foe a passcode, it just shows my location. The passcode comes up randomly when it wants to, in the middle of a journey, and even after entering 0000, it still keeps dropping the connection. Your one is the BT77 too right?

russelr - Think I'll need your GPS...heard the BT77 varies in quality...so I probably got a lemon. I've a Kingston 512MB, 7-8MB/s seems fast enough for me. You said you could talk handsfree - with a bluetooth headset paired at the same time, right?

Just now on the way home, it dropped the bluetooth, but not very frequently, it's got a mind of it's own.

Looks as if v5.0609.2.0.1 has sorted the problem. :D

Does anyone get a "welcome to TomTom mobile" message appear briefly in the top right corner when you start up?

I too get (and always) did the Welcome to TomTom Mobile message. I am on v3 firmware for the N70 by the way.

Mine still drops BT GPS etc. since I upgraded to v3 firmware but I do not have a genuine BT GPS receiver - I have a Navman unit. I still wonder if I get a TT one things would be okay but I like the Navman since it takes AAA batteries so easy to have spares.

But with hindsight, Navman GPS has lost GPS signal consistently on one bit of the M25 upon exiting tunnels when using PDA and Memory Map 2004 sometimes loses GPS... so maybe I need to risk £80 on a TT receiver? Or £160 with software and sell the software.

Makes you wonder why TT will not sell TT Mobile without their GPS but will sell Navigator... maybe there's a clue there, i.e. only reliable with a SiRF III based GPS receiver?

I originally bought a BT-77 gps receiver but to be honest, it was close to useless. I sold it on to a guy at work who uses it with a Nokia 6680 with no problems, so it looks like a compatability issue with the N70. I decided to take the plunge and shell out £80 on the original TT gps whilst I was still on v3 firmware and There was certainly an improvement. But I think the combination of the TT gps and v5 firmware is the answer to be honest.

The root of the problem seems to me to be the N70, so it's about time Nokia got their a***s in gear and sorted it out one and for all, before they lose their loyal customer base in droves :x

It's all sorted boys and girl's ttm5 now work's on N70 fully updated no more bug's clear runnig . HOW THAT THEN ? I had my phone flashed to v5. . Then updated ttm myself as it's not the mccoy BINGO it works like a dream no more bug's .Useing a BT-Q880 gps nice one does the job. Not forgetting why i got the N70 yes i can use 2 bluetooth at the sametime. Now am ready to help any poor sod fix they bug's . The only crap i am now trying to sort is network 3 , the toerags still holding back the unlock codes with one bullshit or the next PLease nokia fix up and let BB5 phone unlock code out to the street's so we can have the right to go where we wont then contact has passed. :D
