My apologies if this has been asked before and I have failed to search the forums adequately:

1. How does TTN5.1 calculate journey times?
2. What speeds does it use for different road types, assuming that's how it performs the calculations?
3. Is there a way of accessing the defaults and adjusting them?

From what I have read, this was possible in some earlier versions, but this may have been the subject of an 'enhancement'.

Tomtom calculates the journey times by speeds that have been programmed in.

I believe that M'ways - 75MPH.

You could change the default speeds in V3 but not in V5, something that a lot of people complain about.

I find the best way to find out what speeds it uses is to plan a route in advanced planning and then play a route demo. The speeds will show you what tomtom uses.

This is something that I have previously queried. I am hoping that some of the techy people on this forum can answer this....

In CoPilot, while the road speed were not adjustable via the interface, it was possible to edit the part of the programme that contained the speeds.

These were held in a config file and this could be edited in Notepad and put back into the programme. Does anyone know where default road speeds are held in TT5, and can this file be edited ??

Cheers

Baz

Thanks for that - good idea. I just tried a stretch of M27, and indeed it did use 75mph. Strange that it doesn't use 70mph, or lower for M ways.

There is also a period of acceleration from a standing start, so now I have a supplementary question:

4. What rate of acceleration is programmed into it? Is it Caterham 7 or 2CV? I guess I could replay demo mode @ 100%, and time it!

I'm certainly not learned in this, but I think I recall that TT3 default for motorways was 65 mph which seemed sensible enough given the likes of the M25 etc.
I find it difficult to believe that the new fixed average speed on TT5 exceeds the speed limit.

Well, believe it or not but this is what we have here in Norway:

Speed limit on most "motorways" (the best roads) are 80-90 km/h, on a very few places it is 100 km/h. TT5 uses 120 km/h when calculating a route on these roads. Needless to say that TT5 "always" wants you to go to a motorway, even if it is WAY out the intuitive route.

I second the idea by "Bazzer", someone with the ability should take a look at the TT5 program. The defined speeds are in there somewhere just waiting to be edited/corrected to real life. Wink

I find that driving at the speed limits and making maximum safe progress I am always arriving 5 to 10 minutes ahead of Tom Toms estimated times.

Obviously rush hour makes it upredictable but overall the timings are never out by much more than that.

It's only in Demo Mode that TT shows 75mph. In the real world TT rates Motorways and multi lane dual carriageways at 67mph. Lesser A roads are rated at about 56mph.

The ETA is calculated by the aggregation of the Route still left to complete. If you were to drive on a Motorway for a long distance at a constant 70mph, the time to complete the journey reduces accordingly.

Hi Oldboy

Can the default road speed data be edited in any way, as can be done with CoPilot ? ie, editing the .Cfg file in Notepad, or similar, and re-inserting in the programme etc.

Cheers

No. That is held in the Map Data. Some Navigation Software have the ability to set up which which type of road you prefer (on a sliding % basis), but not TT.

The limited speed option on TT, say 55mph, just means that when building the route, TT treats all roads that are faster than that as having the same priority as the slower ones. You end up going down nearly every track. Rolling Eyes

Not true.

You can test this by planning a route using A->B Advanced Planning and comparing the estimated time in Route Summary with the estimated time at the start of the Demo Route.

Does TTN integrate with Calender?

This may be old news to some of you, but last weekend I drove back from Coventry to Surrey and I was doing between 75-80 on M40.

I also have TTN5.1 to show the speed and most of the time it was showing 3-4 mph below the actual speed I was driving and consequently the ETA was about 10-15 mins longer than the actual journey time.

Not brilliant but not that bad either.

I think you'll find it was TT showing the actual and not your speedo...
