I am considering purchasing an Etrex Venture (cheaper than a geko) here in Sweden. The product description claims it has a compass with accuracy +/- 2 degrees. As a geologist, this feature greatly interests me since I am measuring 100's of orientations daily. Now I know you're saying, "What a lazy ! Use a normal compass". The problem is that I am mapping over some iron deposits that make a conventional compass useless. I was hoping this "electronic compass" could overcome this problem. Any insight as to how the compass works in Etrex Venture. Is it any different than in the Silva GPS?

I'm not familiar with that particular Garmin model, but there's only two ways that compasses are possible on GPS.

The first is to use the GPS signals - which requires you to walk in a straight line. The GPS will then give the direction of movement as a bearing from true north.

The other way, which some units including some more up-market Garmins have, is to include a magnetic flux gate compass in the GPS receiver. This works whilst stationary. However, I suspect this will be just as affected by the iron deposits as an ordinary magnetic compass.
