Is it possible to have TomTom alert you of Speed Camera sites when you DO NOT have a route planned?

I want to be able to just drive, without any route planned, and see and hear any alerts of Speed Cameras on my route. Is this possible?

I have spoken to a friend who reckons you can only be alerted to Speed Camera POI's if you are travelling along a route, already mapped and planned by TomTom.

TomTom will warn you of speed cameras,

So long as you have not checked the Warn only if POI on route box

Please also be aware that it is BEST to untick the "warn only if POI is on route" because of the way the cams are logged - sometimes they only appear to be on one side of the road when they are on both.

ie if the cam is marked as "on the other side of the road" and its set to warn when on route.... you would not know there was one there... even though there may well be one on your side too !

TomTom 3 & 5 cannot tell which side of the road the camera is located, it will warn whatever direction you are going regardless.

Are you sure about that? I thought it treated dual carriageways as two separate roads?

Only if the opposite lanes are separated by a good distance, which is not often and say you are using CheckPOInt with the detection angle set very narrow.

To get proper lane separation, the data (Safety Camera + other add-on poi's) would need to have directional information in the files which it does not have, at the present time most if not all GPS software cannot read it.

The dedicated units like Road Angle etc can do what you say.
