I was a bit worried about the screen size when I first saw the i3, but after using it I can happily say that the screen is perfect.

I tend to rely on the voice prompt but a quick look at the display easily shows you the road ahead and the turns required.

The smallness is a plus from my point as it makes the unit nice and portable and doesn't take up loads of windscreen space.

Highly recommended.

The small size and weight of the unit also has the advantage of not vibrating when driving and it fits nicely into my wife's handbag.

Good God man have you no respect for your lovely i3?
Have you ever looked in a woman's handbag?
The junk in there will scratch the screen to blazes or break it!
Plus she'll never be able to find it again amongst all the other stuff in there!

Hi,

I have had my I3 for a few days and love it, however I have to have it just above my rear view mirror due to this being the only "spot" not coated in the UV reflective thingy! I actually find this position ideal as I only have to glance up a little bit due to high seating position in car and it is actually nearer to me face than if it was in the bottom right / bottom middle of the car windscreen!

I'm not a fan of constantly changing batteries in things so would ideally like to keep it on the car power lead all the time. Also I notice that the speech is a LOT louder on a usb/in-car power source than off batteries, even when they are brand new ones! However the lead supplied by Garmin is not long enough to fit neatly around the edge of my car and down to to cig lighter Sad

Is it possible to get a longer power lead? It's really annoying as it only needs to be about 20cm longer and it would be fine! Of course, for now, I can run it off the adaptor with the wire dangling down but it looks rubbish!

I'm new to the world of GPS so does anyone know if and where it is possible to get a longer lead? Also, it the connection to the unit a standard thing or specific to the I3?

Thanks!

Get yourself one of the extensions for the cigarette lighter adaptor and put it on top os the dashboard or any place where the original lead can reach to. I bought one a while ago from Lidle whick has three sockets so I can also plug my mobile charger as well as the GPS and have one more free. I am sure it is available somewhere online as I've seen it mentioned elsewhere on this forum but can't remember where.

I've done this in both my cars, and hardwired the extension cable in to keep the original socket free, basically cut the plug off the extension and then soldered the two wires into the back of the car socket.

The triple extension can be got here for just under a tenner. NB, the one sent had a 2.5m cable, not 1.7m as advertised.

If you want to keep your cigarette lighter connector (to use in other cars etc), you can cut the pc end off a usb cable instead. The red and black wire are 5v and 0v. To hardwire, get a 12v to 5v voltage dropper from www.carnetix.com (CNX P5V) and connect up (eg to stereo 12v and switched supply) using the little blue cable clips from Halfords.

Cheap to do, and fully hardwired - no lighter sockets at all (no soldering either)...

Hi, thanks guys for all your advice about my dilema with extending the power lead to the cigarette lighter.

I popped down to a local motor accessories store today and got a cigarette lighter extension lead for £5. Works a treat, hidden the cables away behind plastic bits and rubbery bits of car and it works a treat!

I noticed maplin had them for even cheaper but they had no stock in my local store Sad

If anyone needs one the link is here....

Best regards,

Matt
