Not the old anti caravan brigade again, I suggest you broaden your horizon and look at whats usually holding the caravan up. |

I find it strange when a 'serious' question is posted on the forum that others sidetrack it with poor biased views, and that the members asking the question, never return to make a comment regarding the time consuming answers given! |

hi dairic
I will disregard the whingers, and say i am going to france shortly (towing) and for most of the journey i will use the map of GB plus the major roads of Europe.
As implied this will mean travelling on A E and D roads in france as the minor roads are not even shown. When near to my destination I will pull into layby/restplace, and load the french map(2 minuites or less) with the route already sorted and continue the last part which i have researched as much as possible.
I am using tom tom.
hope this helps

yes copilot does have the option of setting road speeds and also has pc planning and you can set multiple waypoints on route
could please keep the thread to the OP (original Posters question) instead of the pro or anti caravan please _________________ currently using aponia truck navigation on windows phone. Good bye IOS don't let the door hit you on the way out .
Oh the joys of being a courier.

All Satnav systems contain fairly limited data about the road networks. Restrictions such as HGV limits and no caravan roads are not availbe at this time from the map data providers (TA and NT), so the only solution that will work reliably for a caravanner is one that allows preplanning.
You have to know the restrictions and road conditions before you plan anyway, so you may find that it is not as simple as just having say Copilot on the PC. Where are you going to get the information about what roads are suitable and and not take?
Therefore any system that has "via" or "waypoints" options will do the job fairly well. PC planning saves a lot of time as it is much easier and faster than a 3.5" screen.
Of most importance is ensuring you use the device as an aid. Use it like a paper map that "suggests" the way to go. Watch out for road signs, and obey them even if the Sat Nav is directing you in that direction. Trust the SatNav enough to work out an alternate route but check and double check what it has worked out looks OK. Don't blindly head off into the wide blue yonder - they are a long way from being that good. generally if it doesn't fell right, it probably isn't.
The money is made selling something that works well enough for most of the time for most people. Caravanners, unfortunately for us, are not most people, most of the time, and our requirements are far more demanding than a car driver ("Perform a legal uturn" doesn't quite cut it when I am towing). The only hope we have of a good system is the commercial HGV drivers pushing for their requirements to be met - there just is not enough money to be made to develop a system that works well for Caravanners. |
